Quick recap, husband is due to have liver wedge resections for 5 mets next week. I'm getting very anxious and the nurse told him today on the phone when he asked that surgery takes approx 6-8 hrs. I know this is a major operation, but I didn't think the surgery itself would take that long. If you've had this done, any thoughts? I believe he'll be in ICU for a couple days etc.,and I know everyone is different, but I'd appreciate your input (and PRAYERS!) thanks . God Bless,

DIane

    Hi Diane,
I had a liver resection 3 years ago today. It was a lengthy procedure and I had the entire right lobe (about 70%) of the liver removed. I was in the "step-down unit" for recovery, not quite ICU but still close observation. Things are a little hazy but the long and short of it is that I was out of the hospital in 1 week. I had no complications. I had subsequent RFA (adminstered in open surgery) to treat a renegade met last March. It went well too.
I hope your husbands procedure goes well. It has the potential to be a real life-saver! You're in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Diane: I had 70% of my liver resected and it took 6 hours. I was in ICU for a day and a half. There were no complications and I was home a week later. It really was not as bad as I thought it would be. My prayers are with you and your husband for a successful, curing surgery. Monica

I had liver surgery done for a met in Feb. at Stanford. The operation took 5.5 hrs. I was in the hospital for 5 days. It was not as bad to recover from as the colon surgery I first had. The first day was rough and painful and they had a drain in . When that was removed on day 4, that was a very quick but memorable painful moment.Like all surgeries get walking ASAP. I am 48 when I had it done. I am doing OK now and will get my 3 month CT scan on Oct 15. Coming back from this surgery was not as bad as the colon. Appetite came back quickly but I did have to watch my movement carefully as it hurt to bend over. All my best.

    Diane,
My liver resection took about 8 hours. I was in ICU 1 day and in the hospital about a week. They really don't know what they are going to find until they open you up. The surgeon wants to make sure they get it all. I hope your husband's procedure goes well. All my best.

I don't know how long it took for my resection, but just remember, even simple surgery takes a while. I had sinus surgery this week, outpatient, nothing serious, and it took an hour.
Prayers will be sent for you and your husband. Remind us the day before so that we can think about you even more the day of surgery.

Thank you all so much for the input. You guys/gals are the best. At least I know it's not "unusual" to take that long. That calms a bit of my anxiety. Thank you so much. God Bless and Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.
