I just discovered I have breast cancer. We are looking at two facilities for treatment. Mayo and Anderson. Any recommendations?

They are both great facilities. You may try for the location that may be easier from your family if one is closer.

Both excellent facilities. Are there centers close to where you live? It's easier to be at home going through treatment and several of other academic centers are connected through cooperative group research. If you get the right doctor who is tuned into the state of the science the facility isn't as important.

Sorry about your recent dx~ the "sisterhood" in here wishes you a full and speedy recovery. Feel free to come in here anytime~I dare say, we are Awesome!
I agree with the 2 responses you have already gotten~both places have great reputations. Thankfully, many, if not most of our local Cancer Treatment Centers are also top of the line. I second the thought that if you have a great surgeon, oncologist, etc close to home, you might do better to consider that option first. Being in familiar surroundings does wonders for both our mental and physical well-being.
Let us know what you decide, please. One word of advice...don't wait TOO long to make your choice. Get this beast out and move on with the business of living Life After Cancer!
    Hugs,

I was treated in a small facility close to home. It was nice to be so close when radiation happens everyday....I could just take an hour off work....

I agree with the others, those are excellent facilities. My Sister went to MD Anderson all 5 years of her struggle with cancer and she got all the latest and best, but she lived in Corpus Christi...several hours drive. She got to stay in my Dad's cousin's home (very much like a hunting lodge, with deer coming up to the front window to eat corn every morning and native woods to look at) when she went there, about once a month, so she did not have to pay for room and board, but it was difficult on her husband's work situation to take off that often to get her there. I am fortunate to be within 30minutes of my Drs. I have chemotherapy once a week and I only have to take 1/2 day off. It is nice to be close to friends and neighbors who can drive me there, or pick up kids, or whatever, if my husband's work won't let him drive. Check with your insurance to see who they will cover. You might see if you have a local American Cancer Society, they could help you find a facility close by. They could also put you in touch with people in your area who have "been there, done that" who might be able to offer first-hand experience with local Doctors. or: whoever made the diagnosis should be able to refer.

This is an excellent place to come to safely express yourself to those who know how you feel, also to get the voice of experience on whatever question you have.

You are in good company...don't get discouraged. seof
