My platelets finally came up and I had my chemo Wed. Just as I was about three forths of the way through the carbo I started itching and broke out in hives. They had to give me a substitute for benadryl and steroids for the reaction. It was very miserable. I am now waiting to see if I am elligable fow a new and only study or if I will do either straight topecon or gemzar.

I'm so sorry to hear you are so uncomfortable. Did they give you Benadryl and the steroids before the treatment began? I always took steroids the night before, the morning of, and had more sterioids and Benadryl just before the infusion. Allergic reactions can happen at any time. I got Taxol/Carbo in 2000, then again in 2006. On the second infusion in 2006 I developed a reaction (much like yours) to Taxol. They switched to Taxotere. So, at least there are other options. Please let us know how you're doing. I'll be praying for a quick recovery from this reaction and that you tolerate the next treatment well.

I also had a reaction from my treatment 9/6 for the second time. I was premedicated starting 12 hours before with pills and in the IV but still started itching by the time I got home. The nurse called me in a Methlylprednisolone Pak and I am taking benedryl over the counter. I use caladryl gel for the additional itchy . spots. Today I am having nausea, but am not sure from what. As a child, benedryl made me nauseaous. I will have to change the chemo if the reaction gets worse than the itchy rash which my oncologist says usually happens. They may drop one chemical next session as we do not know if it's taxol or carboplatin. I hate to drop it because it is really working on me.

What a bummer! Carbo is a hard one but seems effective. Good luck with either topotecan or gemzar. Hugs Bonnie

I feel terrible for you! I am having a very difficult time dealing with just the Gemzar. Sure hope you are feeling better by now and able to continue treatments.

    Collins,
I had a reaction to taxol, at first. They just gave more steriods, more benadryl and slowed the drip down and I was fine after that. I hope that the side effects don't get any worse for you, as Gemzar although easy at first to tolerate can also be very nasty,I was almost into full congestive heart failure from the fluid build up. Good luck. sending (((hugz))) to you...Joanne
