I did finally have surgery for my stage IV rectal cancer but it was almost 2 years after my diagnosis. My oncologists said that I needed a full body treatment first (chemo) for my liver and lung mets. If you would like to learn about which chemos, etc. you can read my personal webpage on this site.
I'm sorry about the port issues. I had mine for almost 3 years and never had any trouble with it.

Hi Wanda - I am a Stage IV colon cancer patient. I was diagnosed in March of 2006. The cancer was first found in the lymph nodes in my neck. It took a lot of tests to determine that it was colon cancer. I had had a colonoscopy just three months before and nothing was found. They told me that I was not a surgical candidate because I cannot be cured. That is because it has spread throughout my body in the lymph system. I have had 6 months of Folfox - followed by a couple of months of Xeloda and then 2 more months of Folfox. I have been on chemo holiday since March. My liver numbers are up so the doc says I should probably start on chemo again. What is your mom's situation? I would be glad to help.

my mom was diagnosed in end oct 2006, with stage 4 colon cancer they did an ultra sound and found that it spread to the liver several spots( to many to operate on liver) the surgeon for the GI said that where it already spread there was no reason to have surgery on the colon, she so far took 6 months of chemo, once every 2 weeks and she is Not responding to it so the oncologist is going to lower her dosage of chemo, she gets lots of bad cramping all day, she takes pain medications, but that is causing I think costipation. She had 2 cat scans and they show a couple more liasons on the liver. They said they cannot cure it but treat her for paliative care, my mom seems to healthy every other way.0 -
Hi Wanda - if it is only in her liver and colon then she might have more options. You might want to go to a big cancer center like MD Anderson or Sloan Kettering because there are lots of treatments for liver mets now and then if they can get those cleaned up - then they can work on the other. I have been working full time through out all of my chemo and have just had a 4 month holiday. My situation is not ideal but we are working on enjoying each and every day we have. If you want to talk off list - that would be fine too.wanda23 said:hi Rita,
