Post Surgery Diet

I, too, had a total gastrectomy 4 1/2 years ago. The surgeon made a pouch for my "stomach" with instructions to start out eating 2 ounces at a time... which I increased to 4 ounces. I remember wanting MORE at four ounces. He sent me to a dietician who made many useful suggestions. If you haven't seen one, I'd recommend that. If he would like to chat with me, ask him to email me at Tiger_LSUfan@hotmail.com. Best of luck to you both and God bless.0

I have just completed a year and a half of trial and error in eating after my esophagus was removed(replaced by a piece of colon)and my stomach was removed. At first everything I was used to eating gave me diahrrea so I had to read up on the gas producing foods and eliminate them. Over a period of months I finally came to a rough balance although there is still some gas from the small intestine not absorbing some foods properly. At this point I started taking an anti-diaherral prescribed by my doctor and started taking an iron supplement. All of these together made the diahrrea manageable. The foods that I can eat and want to eat have shrunk. Also eating 5 small meals a day complicates things at times(I just make a regular meal and eat half and eat the other half for the next small meal. I also lost roughly 30 lbs. in about 8 months. I became alarmed and my doctor prescribed TPN which is a supplement that I take during the night.
There is more that I can share, but I'm sure that you would rather ask specific questions about your condition.
Take care and know that in time your body will adjust as best it can it is just so slow sometimes.0 -

My brother had his stomach & spline removed on Oct.4. At this time the doctors are telling us that where the esophagus & colon are connected is not functioning (it has to wakeup) He has no leakage or stopages. He has bad diaherra. Was this anything that you experienced.
I would be greatly appreicative of any info about the coming days and weeks. Please tell me as much details as you can. I can't find any information on what to do or expect. Your message was the most encouraging that I found.
Thanks for your help.0
