Help Again - Setback

Hello,
This is loeyann again, if you recall I was here a few weeks ago telling you all about my sister, well we had a major setback. She went for her second round of chemo, and well to make a long story short she ended up with a perforated bowel and had a large abcess removed from her belly port area. She is in CCU and on a ventilator to help her breathe, until she gets stronger. They are worried about sepsis now. She lost alot of blood, has no electrolytes, and is real sick, she also has a colostomy bag they say it is reversible. Can anyone tell me how does this happen? The doctor says he can't believe it took this long to show up, they check her blood all the time, she did call and tell them the port was sore when she got it. She almost died! Our family is just floored! We thought she was lucky her forst round of chemo went well so to speak, she was just real tired for a few days and had a little diareah and it went away, she had bad achyness from the Neulasta and Procrit but that subsided after a few days and some pain medicine. They removed the belly port of course, will they put it back in do you think? I have not brought myself to go and see her yet, I can't handle seeing her on all those machines, I feel so helpless. I am going to try to get there on Thursday, she might be off the ventilator then if she keeps on improving. I am sorry for such a long blog but I am scared and stumped.

    I am so sorry to hear this news about your sister,,,I'm not sure if they will put another port in, but they will most likely wait until she is stronger before they decide. Again I'm sorry your family is going through all this ,please know you are in my prayers...(((hugz)))..Joanne

    Dear Loeyann, I am so sorry to hear about your sister. One never knows why things happen but rest in God's love and all the prayers. I am praying for all of you. For your sisters healing, your family and for you. I pray you do find the ability to visit her and are able to look beyond the machines and see your sister as she has always been. The visit may have to be brief, but know the presence of family and loved ones give a person more strength than you can imagine. Sometimes it's just what a person needs.

    I would think the IP therapy will not be continued, but once she regains her strength the chemo will be.

    Please keep us posted and know we here for you also. If you need a place to vent or share your fears and frustration this is a safe place.

    How difficult this must be for all of you. But as Bonnie said, even a brief visit would be so helpful to your sister. I know it's difficult for you, but look beyond her outward appearance and focus on what you know of your sister - her strengths, what brings her joy, the love. Just take one day at a time, and eventually you will get all your info as to where they will proceed from here. I'm glad to hear they want her to get stronger before proceeding.
