I am a 16 year survivor of hodgkin's disease. I recently had an appt at a clinic for survivors - i was warned that i could have heart failure during labor due to the drugs and radiation treatment used to cure me. has anyone else been told this? i am not pregnant yet but wonder if i should be seeing an OB/GYN who has knowledge of the risks cancer survivors face when having a baby. any suggestions?

I gave birth 2 years after a 6 month AVBD treatment for Hodgkins, no radiation. My pregnancy was literally a joy, and my labor and delivery lasted 4 hours from the time I woke up in the morning... I definitely didn't have that experience. I haven't heard of this "side effect". I was seeing my oncologist every 3 months at the time, and my OB/GYN was certainly aware of my circumstances. I was refered to a high risk Dr. (for one visit and he sent me back to my regular OB/GYN) because of concerns about my weight. I am 5'9" and was only 111lbs when I got pregnant, due to chemo's affect on my stomach and appetite. HOWEVER, I would certainly research this phenomenon further, if a dr. told you of this, I wouldn't want discount their superior knowledge in these areas. This was just my experience!

I had two children since chemo for HD Lymphoma. With my first child I just had a elevated heart rate, but with the second child I had cong.heart failure two days after his birth, due to adrmycin. So I would consult with a cardiologist to make sure everything is ok.Also I am doing well since this happen and it will be 7yrs on Feb 15,2008. Take care and best wishes
