Hi Greg,PGLGreg said:Fascinating stuff for us rectal cancer survivors. What does the "radical" mean in "radical resection"? The same as LAR = Low Abdominal Resection? How did you know that if you had a radical resection that you would have an ileostomy?
Yes, fascinating, but I could have happily gone through my entire life without gaining this part of my "education".
;-)
Yes, same as a Low Abdominal Resection. By "radical" I meant major abdominal surgery involving a week or two hospital stay. That is, a radical approach whereby other parts are removed besides the tumor, i.e., the rectum, the sigmoid colon, lymph nodes, etc. This is in contrast to a local excision which is minor surgery via the anus in which only the tumor is removed. This is frequently performed on an outpatient basis the same day of the operation.
The surgeon told me that if I had the resection he would install an ileostomy for about three months while the resection healed. Then it would be reversed.
