Hi,all. My husband is coming home tomorrow from a liver ressection that was succesfull. He is considered cancer free now but still have to go to more 7 and a half months of chemo. It is a clinical study, and we are wondering if anybody in the group had to go to such a long pos-treatment or if the fact that Sloan wants us to do this study is what is making it longer.... any ideas? is is worthed?

    I was supposed to have a liver resection, and the onc told me that because I had been on chemo for 8 months, I may not have had to do additional chemo. It would all depend on the c-scan and if it showed anything worrisome. But I had also heard that chemo after surgery was a good idea to kill any 'stray' cells lurking about. Was your husband on chemo a long time prior to resection? Monica

    Hi,monica. He was supposed to be in 6 months but made it in 4. The chemo after is supposed to be for 7 and a half months. I have to say, they found in the surgery that 3 of his 5 tumors that we thought desapeared really did not and it could only be seen by surgery- because it grew back a little. So now I am a strong believer in this type of course of treatment. But he has his own business and I am wondering if I will have to quit my 2 part-time jobs and get a "real" full time... How much more do u have to go?

    So sorry to hear that your husband is up for a long chemo regime, but very happy to hear about the current cancer free portion...that is music to anyone's ears! I do not have any answers for you - only that Sloan- Kettering has a super reputation. How about getting another opinion of the clinical trial regimen? I had two extra opinons. They were expensive as they were out of pocket, but I am glad that I had them.

    I can not answer your question about the clinical trial, but my mom is having surgery in 6 weeks to remove her last remaining tumor. Her oncologist said that even though my mom would be "cancer free" after the surgery, that it would be best for my mom to do 6 additional months of chemo. She explained to us that this would be to kill any stray cells that may be hanging around. Don't know if this is the plan we will go with, we are getting a second opinion. Good luck to you and great news on the liver resection.

    kathi,you were right, I did not make a big deal over the wonderful news of cancer-free out of respect for the ones that did not get there yet.It is a big fight, but in our case it is worthed...Thanks for the dance....

    It sounds as if continuing on chemo for a while is a prudent thing to do. I have to continue until there hopefully enough shrinkage to go in and do a resection. It was really close but then they found two tiny spots on the lungs. I hope you are able to make a decision you are happy with in regards to your job(s). Monica
