Twas the night during Relay
by: Kathy Mosier
âTwas the night during Relay and all thru the park
Hundreds of creatures were stirring only minutes âtill dark.
The luminaria were placed around the track with great care,
A glowing reminder of why we were all there.
Donning our purple and lacing our shoes
No other activity this night would we choose.
24 hours of celebration, laughter and fun
We just pitched our tent and were ready to run.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But three small children, their mother holding them near.
Silently they sat watching a flame dance below
Atop a candle which set their small bag all a glow.
The smallest girl, probably just more than three
Pointed at the photo and shouted with glee.
Thatâs us Mommy when we went on vacation
Then continued her story, without hesitation.
It was just last summer â before you got sick.
Iâm really glad Mommy you got better so quick.
Me too Mommy, said the boy probably seven
Iâm glad you stayed here instead of going to Heaven.
Oh! Said the woman itâs not me you must thank.
She choked back the tears as her heart nearly sank.
See all these great people out here tonight.
They gave Mommy the strength she needed to fight.
They gave me the testing, treatments and care.
I guess they even gave me my crazy new hair.
They are all a part of the Cancer Society crew.
You wonât find anyone with a Mission so true.
Teams of neighbors, family, co-workers with friend
Have worked to raise money to bring cancer to an end.
Yard sales, raffles, car washes and such
If it helped save just one life, the effortâs not much.
Get the test! Find a Cure! Quit smoking today!
The American Cancer Society will help lead the way.
Their Mission IS possible; they will prove it is so
Cancer rates have decreased from just a few years ago.
And then for a moment she took a short pause.
Itâs our turn to help fight for this wonderful cause.
Hand in hand they started their very first lap
While hundreds of Relayers started to clap.
With a tear in my eye but a smile on my face
I knew in my heart I was in the right place
Peace, love and goodwill and hope burning bright
What a beautiful sight this great Relay night!
As she turned her head and gave me a grin
I knew in an instance this battle weâll win!
Then I heard her exclaim as she walked steady and sure
There is no finish until thereâs a cure!
