    valerie: I think you need to keep asking questions (with your doctor, not the nurse..) until you have an adequate and understandable response-(to you) of exactly what the drugs do and do not do, and how they affect your mom's internal functions. The reason that they won't do surgery is because the drug(s) inhibit blood vessel growth-(all) and consequently healing..it's great news that the drugs are "killing" the cancer..but make them explain exactly what the overall effects are, and how they affect the body's ability to heal..     My CEA was not an issue either. But my onc still checks it every time. It goes up and down a little like your mothers but since it was never an indicator I pretty much just ignore it. :-)
