Hi everyone - Just had to share my news! I found out today that I do NOT have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation! My oncologist is stunned! See, I have every risk factor/marker for this mutation - four immediate family members (plus myself) with breast, ovarian, or colon cancer AND I'm of Ashkenazie Jewish heritage (the HUGEST of all risk factors).
This means I won't need an immediate second mastectomy. And it means that I haven't passed on a horrible legacy to my children and grandchildren. All my docs have told me many times that some people just make tumors and they don't really know why. They have said that it's actually pretty rare that these cancers are genetically passed on. So, I guess it just a horrible coincidence that so many in my family had/have these cancers.
Anyway, I'm just very thankful that I don't have either mutation and that I didn't pass this monster on to future generations.

Roxanne - Ashkenazie Jews all originated in the eastern European area as a 'tribe.' My grandparents, for example, are all from Russia and Germany. For whatever strange reasons, several deadly diseases including several cancers, Tay-Saks, and others, run rampant among those of us with this heritage.roxanne53 said:YIIPPPEEEE FOR YOU!!!!!GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!
I am wondering where this nationality is from:
Ashkenazie Jewish heritage?
In the eastern European area??
WONDERFUL NEWS

Hip, Hip, Hoorah..............Hip, Hip, Hoorah!!!!!! Yeaaaaa, Shelley!!!!!!!!!
You go Girl!!!
You are one of the miracles we get to see. With all evidence, and doctors thinking the prediction would be otherwise.....you get to be in one of those percentages that is were you want to be.
Those prayers are definatly working. May God Bless you and all of us, Kathy0 -
Shelley, Thats just fantastic! I know that you must be so relieved to learn this! I know what you mean about leaving the cancer legacy to your children. I am a two time cancer survivor, (bc and cervical). I just hate what this may mean to my daughter. Great news and a wonderful holiday present to you and your family!0

Yeah Shelley! Mazel Tov. What great news and relief. Now concentrate on unwinding and enjoying the season. Happy Chanukah and Happy Holidays. God Bless your doctors.

Congrats Shelley!
I'm so happy for you! I've struggled with the decision to have genetic testing. Some French Canadien groups are high risk as well, and I'm the fifth woman in my family with the BC diagnosis (both sides of the family, all French Canadien). As I have a 17 year old daughter, I've decided to have the testing as well, after the holidays. I'll pray for a good outcome as well. Thanks for sharing the good news! It's good to spread the hope!
Hugs, Sue0
