Hi everyone. I have done a lot of research about a supplement called Avemar. I have mentioned this supplement before with few responses, and I'm not sure why. Am I missing something? It seems like something that could slow down the metastasis of colon cancer. Here is something I read on the "Self-Help Cancer" website.

Avemar, sometimes referred to as MSC, is a nutritional compound produced by the fermentation of wheat germ (Triticum vulgaris) by bakers yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), in a patented process which yields a standardized quantity of the naturally occurring flavone 2,6-dimethoxy-p-benzoquinone (2,6-DMBQ). It is used as a supportive adjunct to conventional cancer treatment. The process was devised by the Hungarian researcher, Professor Mate Hidvegi, during the 1990s. Avemar is manufactured in Hungary, where it is an accepted part of cancer treatment. According to a number of studies, Avemar enhances immune system regulation in a number of ways, making it easier for the immune system to see cancer cells and destroy them. Avemar also selectively inhibits glucose metabolism in cancer cells, reducing their ability to multiply.

A number of small clinical trials conducted since 2000 have proved encouraging. One study, published in the British Journal of Cancer in 2003, showed a reduction from 23.1% to 7.6% of new metastases over six months among 66 colorectal cancer patients who received Avemar and 104 who did not. Other trials have shown similar, significant results with other forms of cancer. American BioSciences Inc., the US distributor of Avemar, has the complete text of the various studies and reviews on their website. The product is subject to considerable marketing effort and sales-oriented presentation of the research data and brand name.

Yeah, I know that there is a large marketing effort to sell this stuff, but there is proven research done on humans.

If you also go to avemarresearch.com, you will find all types of published data. One interesting article was published in the British Journal of Cancer. There is also info. about Avemar on the Sloan-Kettering site (under herbals and botannicals).

Although Avemar is pretty pricey, we are considering getting it for my dad, but before we do that, I am wondering what you all think of it. Do you think we would be wasting our money?

    Difficult to tell about this stuff..all the study participants were also receiving conventional tx.-(chemo, radiation, etc.) and there have been no other human studies that I know of to compare..the product has not, by itself been used to treat colorectal cancer..it's a dietary supplement, so it probably can't hurt..what does your Doc say about it? Bud

    Hi Bud,

    I haven't discussed it with my dad's onc yet, but I already know what he will say... that there is no scientific proof that the supplement works. That is what he told us about a couple of other supplements I have mentioned to him. He is very heavily into research, but does not research any dietary supplements or nutrition. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try it.

    Hi Lee,

    I think this looks interesting and like Bud I say "why not?". I might look into it. My Dad has prostrate cancer, CLL, and now lymphoma. He also has some spots on his liver. I will try anything to get him better. I'm glad I stopped chemo because now I will feel well enough to help him. Keep us posted if you try this. HUGS.

    in my unprofessional opinion, all cancer is a result of a crappy diet, and a subsequent failure of the immune system..anything that boosts the immune system should help..

    Yes, I'm now taking Avemar. Started about 27 day's ago after reading about it here and inquiring online. My husband and I figured it couldn't hurt, but I haven't told my doctor about it. He doesn't want me taking any herbal supplements since he doesn't know how it will effect the chemo. I can't tell yet if it's helping, and I'm not sure if I will be able to later since I don't have any tumors to watch. Mine were surgically removed and I'm once again taking adjuvent chemo and just watching my CEA. A rise in it is how my recurrance was detected. We did just get 3 more months supply.
    As for the Avemar, it taste horrible. If your Father has any problems swallowing things distasteful or has any nausea, he may not be able to drink it. If you try, hold your breath or breath through your mouth only while drinking it. It's about that time right now so Good Luck to your Dad. Kandy
