Oxi revisited!

Had 2 treatments of oxiplatin (Folfox) 1st was no problem however 2 spiked a high temperature.

Went on to radiation/continuous chemo 5fu 28 rounds completed. Went to see my oncologist to-day and I am going to try Oxi again. This time I will be VERY closely monitored, and will be taking pre-med and a much slower infusion. I will be starting sometime next week - please wish me luck! I was sooooo upset when I thought that my oncologist was going to stop the Folfox and put me on 5Fu - but she seems to think that we can at least squeeze in a few more treatments.

I know that Oxi is very unpleasant has some nasty side effects, but the success numbers are encouraging.

I'm willing to try if it is going to give me a "fighting chance" at smashing the beast!!

    We will be thinking of you and trust that this time it will go well. I am starting Folfox tomorrow and the anxiety has been worse than I had waiting for my test results in the past. Let's both just whiz through it ( with help from our friends and from above).

    Good luck on the oxiplatin. Hopefully the premeds will stop any horrible side effects. I know that JADot had some but I've been ok (furiously knocking on wood) with the oxiplatin. Only 4 more treatments to go. The tinglies are the worst thing that is happening to me. I will keep you in my thoughts. Good vibes coming your way.

    Hi Joyce -

    Oxaliplatin is a "difficult" drug, but as you say it has pretty good results. My onc says pretty much "I hate doing this to you guys, but I am so PLEASED with the results". I am one of her "star patients" (We'll see if that continues after scan this Thursday.), but she has several others who she says are "right behind me" and who all have had oxaliplatin.

    So, best of luck. Hopefully the longer infustion and additional pre-meds will help. How long is your infusion going to be (mine was 2 hours usually, but a couple of times 2.5 due to infusion issues - I have nasty small veins and didn't have a port). And my premeds were dexamethasone (DECADRON), KYTRIL, calcium and magnesium.

    I wish you all the best. Hoefully being monitored more closely means you can be more safe when taking this treatment.

    Betsy: I don't know exactly what she is going to give me. She did mention a steroid. She didn't mention how long it would be for the infusion, just that it would be slowed down. I'm confident that I'm in good hands --- she is an excellent oncologist (young) and teaches at the local university. She is very up on the latest medical practices.

    Wishing you all the best with the FOLFOX as you start up again. Hopefully the premeds will do the trick. I had a mild allergic reaction to the folfox (swollen lips) and so took antihistamines for a few days, right before and during the infusion. Made me sleepy -- but who wants to be alert for all that, anyway! Best wishes.

    I went to 8 or 9 then had a small reaction so my onc left that off the next time I went in.

    Slow might be the ticket....they had to do that for me with my Taxol for the breast ca...
