blood type diet
Can anyone give me more info. on it? I'm a little skeptical about it.
He also said that my dad should juice, but he needs to juice with the fruits and vegetables specifically designed to help him fight the disease based on his own blood type.
Oh, he also said that my dad should be drinking distilled water rather than spring or filtered water, and also almond or rice milk as opposed to regular milk or soy milk.
Please help!!! I'm so confused. I don't know what advice to give my dad in terms of diet. I want to give him correct info., but I want him to do things the right way. It's not like we have tons of time to too much research on this stuff.
Thanks guys,

Hi Lee,
I gave my dad the info on this diet as well. There is a book called "eat right for your type"
The book is all about eating for your specific blood type. There are lists of foods to avoid for your type of blood and foods that are highly beneficial.
I found many contradictions though from another book I sent my father called "Beating Cancer with Nutrition" by patrick Quillian (sp?)
Best thing maybe would be to use the blood type diet as a guide and eliminate any cancer loving foods from their food list. My dad is type o so if you need a list of foods for "O" let me know..I think I have it saved on my computer somewhere.
Also, juicing is supposed to be great and there are a few on this site who cured their cancer from juicing..not chemo. One is Emily...maybe search old posts for her messages.
I don't know much about the milk other than my dad read a book calld i think "the china syndrome" ??? and there is something in milk that causes cancer.
Hope this helps.

Hmmm...this typing thing sound a little out there. I haven't done the research so I can't say definitively, but it sounds like a catchy thing instead of a scitific thing. I went with Quillin and a few dietbooks specifically for cancer patients and people on chemo, and I've looked back.
The thing on juicing is true, just asked Emily
Distilled water over spring water - that one is your choice.
Milk probably isn't the best thing because of the animal fat and hormones, but soy milk is perfect because it has protein and genistein.
Lee - your father's health is way too important for you to rely on anecdotes. You're doing the right thing by talking to folks on this board. I strongly strongly recommend that you spend the time and do the research to empower yourself. A great place to start is Patrick Quillin's book "Fighting Cancer with Nutrition", which is mentioned above already by Sue.
Good luck to you!

Hi Lee,
Yes, I have heard of the diet and have the list in my file.
This is an area that makes my head spin---diets and cancer. There is so much info out there that contradicts eachother. It gets so confusing and frustrating.
Distilled water is controversial. There are two camps on that one (oh surprise).
I have read refuted reports on the blood type diet. But any diet that comes out can be refuted--just look at what a tizzy juicing does or antioxidants and chemo! But I see no reason why not to try it. The foods on the list are all natural foods. It's not like you eat french fries (cancer sticks for cc survivors) and chocolate malts. It's just fruits, veggies, fish, meats, whole grains, nuts and seeds. No junk.
I personally juiced veggies that specifically targeted my digestive system:
carrots (colon)
parsley
ginger
celery
spinach
apple
and to that I add green powder that is jam packed with nutrition and protein powder and flax seeds. I bounced around on protein powders--soy, brown rice, whey, fermented soy......soy is very controversial too. IT can be hard on the thyroid and depress it.
You go to different sources and you get different opinions. So, for me, I embraced what made sense to me--juicing and the macrobiotic diet. I don't follow specifically the macro now, but I still juice every day. I keep the macro philosophy with eating towards the "center" and trying to stay alkaline.
My good friend is a massage therapist and she swears by the Eat Right For Your Type and went to seminars for it so she can advise people on it. I just haven't tried it.
I do know that cows milk is not a good idea for colon cancer cuz it's mucus forming and it coats the colon and makes it more difficult to absorb nutrients.
You can do a google on the blood typing. If not, I have the list of foods.
I am not sure if this helps at all but just know you are not alone in the confusion. I'm right there with ya honey! :-)
All I k now is juicing live enzymes is key to optimal health. It's a fabulous way to gain the most nutrition quickly and when your health is compromised time is of the essence. Juicing is great b/c your body doesn't have to work so hard to break down and digest the foods to derive the nutrition. And enzymes are IT!
A good website to answer some of your questions is:
www.mercola.com
he has articles about distilled water I think and juicing etc. He's an anti grain guy but very savvy on inflammation and stuff.....which many "experts" think that inflammation is the cause of most diseases in some way or another.

Pink (Lee) I understand the confusion when it comes to diet. There is so much (mis)information out there that it is difficult to decifer what is truth or fiction. I've been studying this on my own for over 20 years but ever since my friend Mark was diagnosed with colon cancer (as well as the passing of a good friend recently and my father two years ago from the same thing), my hobby has turned into a mission to get the truth out there and I'm starting my credential in nutrition. Not a small feat for a musician!
This diet is bogus - please don't waste your time or money buying the book. Cancer patients, or anyone else for that matter, should not be consuming fatty meats and dairy. This has been scientifically proven many times over. The hormones, the leukemia virus (in 80% of our cows), the fat, the lack of fiber in meat, the overdose of protein - we don't need it. It feeds and promotes cancer.
How do I know this? I've read and read and picked brains and inquired and experimented on my own body. The book that Sue mentioned is "The China Study" a 30 year trial conducted by Colin Campbell. I've talked at length with Dr. Campbell in person who is very generous with his time and eager to educate. I was on a health cruise for a week where he was a speaker. He is the most knowledable person alive when it comes to disease and nutrition. He's a Biochemical Nutritionist from Cornell University. The author of "The Blood Type Diet" is an ND, a Naturopathic "Doctor" from Bastyr. Bastyr is a decent University although to get into this particular program, you don't even need a Bachelor's degree. It is "recommended." I think giving him the title of doctor is stretching the truth. But that is not the worst thing - the person that influenced me most when it comes to nutrition was not a doctor either (Nathan Pritikin) BUT he did have scientific evidence to back up his claims. D'Adamo has no evidence to back up what he says.
John McDougall, another mentor of mine, is an internist that has practiced for over thirty years. Both Campbell and McDougall came from a meat eating, farm background. Neither eat meat or dairy now having witnessed the trouble these foods have on the body. They both agree on a plant based, alkaline diet to prevent and treat disease.
Everyone should read the "China Study." This is THE most important book out there when it comes to nutrition. Campbell did an excellent job writing this book in laymans terms. The other book I recommend is "12 Days to Dynamic Health" by Dr. McDougall. another expert when it comes to disease and diet. Neither man is concerned about profit margins - you can find McDougall's program laid out for free on his site.
This is not just two men alone preaching this concept but an army of doctors who are fed up with the state of health in this country. A few other brains in the field are Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn (top heart surgeon, vegan), Dr. Ruth Heidrich (cancer survivor, athlete, vegan), John Robbins - "Food Revolution (pulitzer writer, activist), Howard Lyman (ex-cattle rancer, vegan, author of "Mad Cowboy"), PCRM or The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (a collective group of medical doctors advocating preventative medicine and a plant based diet).
Countries that consume the most animal products have the most diseases. Vegetables have all the protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals we need. It has been a long battle getting groups to admit this but they can no longer deny the research. The American Heart Association finally admitted that a plant based diet has all the nutrients our body needs and is preferable to a fatty, cancer-causing, heart-attack promoting meat diet. McDougall asked them relentlessly for years to provide evidence of their claim that vegetables have an "inferior" form of protein - they couldn't do it.
Sorry to sound so evangelical but I'm from an all American background myself. The only way I've gotten a handle on my own health is by listening to those mentioned above, NOT my own doctors who never once asked what I ate. Ailments no longer a part of my life after following the advise of McDougall, Campbell - high cholesteral, acne, breast lumps (caffeine), constipation, lack of energy, excema, brittle nails, Huge PMS, etc. Years of pills and doctor bills never made a dent in these conditions.0 -
This is a known type of diet. The naturopath doctor created it. He wrote a book "Eat right for your type". His name is Peter Constantine. He also wrote a book on people character/personality type depending on a blood type. It is "What is your type?".
I read these 2 books. When I read the book about the diet it kind of made a little sense to me. I have never tried it.
However, I used to work with a woman who decided to follow this type of diet religiously. I remember her saying that she felt great first. But later she has got very sick and could not work any longer. I don't know reasons, but it seemed to me that it was connected with this diet.
I personally don't believe it. I believe that the best diet is a complex diet of vegetables, fruits, carbs, protein. There is a pyramid that professional nutritionists give. It is complex diet. So, in my opinion, I would not waste my time on it.0 -
You're making yourself crazy with this stuff. My sister in law tried following that diet for blood type-didn't work at all. The problem with trying to find the answer after your dad already has cancer is that you all feel guilty for just having been eating all your life. That guilt isn't helping. And nutrition can't cure him now. However, nutrition should be a part of his treatment. Just please, eat healthy, and give yourselves a break from all this angonizing.0

The problem with the notion of just eating healthy is that it means different things to different people. I happen to think that dairy is not healthy but to others who drink their milk every day think they are being healthy eaters. And for those who peel off the skin from their chicken breasts think they are being healthy but to vegan diets the poultry would not constitute healthy eating. To raw foodists no cooked foods are healthy. To macrobiotic followers too much raw foods isn't healthy.
It is all a matter of opinion. According to Dr. Mercola too much grain in the diet (whole or otherwise) is not good and he promotes meat and some guy (I forget his name but I got an enewsletter from him) takes issue with Dr. McDougall cuz he promotes tomatoes and this guy says any nightshades are detrimental to one's health.
Every single dietary approach that I have looked into has someone out there refuting it with good arguments.
So eating healthy may not be as simple as it sounds.
And you're kinda making presumptions that we all are feeling guilty for eating. I don't think that is a fair or kind statement.
As for curing with nutrition, that too can be refuted. Declaring that he cannot be cured is kinda low down.
I didn't get the feeling that any of us are agonizing over this.....confused about some issues, yes, but agonizing?
Not sure where you're coming from.
