Still in Remission

Hi Everyone,

My Dad just got the results from his 1st scans since going on a maintenance schedule of chemo. NED!!!! Yeah.

For any newcomers: Dad was diagnosed 6/04 w/ stage iv, metastasis to liver and peritineum. Told he probably wouldn't make it through Christmas that year. 1st round of chemo killed the beast and he was in remission. Chemo ended in 1/05. In 8/05 cancer was starting to show up again. He was now resistant to 1st chemo regimen so he was started on Erbitux/Irinotecan in 8/05. Treatment officially stopped in 2/06. I insisted on keeping a maintenance schedule and the Doctor agreed and said it would be trial and error as there really is no such thing as maintenance chemo. Cancer still remains in remission almost 2 years from original diagnosis.

Further proof that Doctors don't have all of the answers and they can not tell you how long you will live. Every person is different. Never give up hope and always go with your intuition. Don't be afraid to ask questions or insist on treatment.

Best Wishes to all of you,
Deneen

    Hi Deneen,

Congratulations to your dad, and bravo to you for your insistence on what you believe to be the best for your father. Your father's oncologist has to be "one of a kind" to agree to something that "isn't on the record!" I am convinced that being one's own advocate or having someone to do the advocacy for one is the key to staying healthy.

May your dad continue to do well, and God bless you for your commitment to your dad's wellness.

    Hugs,

    Kay

That is great news!!! I'm hoping for the same for my father (stage IV) who will be going for his CAT scan tomorrow. It's great to hear stories like yours when doctors are proved wrong!!

    Hi Deneen,

I'm glad you didn't loose hope and listen to the bad stats from your doctor. I hate those anyway. We are not stats we are people. Give your dad another big hug and congrats.
