Hi, I am new to this board, have seen other message boards for lung cancer and they are very helful, for advice, support, hope and information. My mother-in-law was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in both lungs in february. They started her off with chemo therapy and she has been in and out of the hospital it seems every couple weeks for other complications. She has currently been hospitalized for two weeks after a large fluid buildup turned out to be a collapsed lung. Due to the mass in that lung being too big, they could not go into the lung to fix this, so did direct radiation on the lung. She had a Cat Scan on tuesday and it showed no results from the radiation. The mass has not shrunk at all. On top of this they informed us that the tumor is pushing on her heart and she is bleeding internally from the Coumadin that they had her on because of recent blood clots. We have made an appointment for her at Mayo clinic and will hopefully be able to get her there next week. The family and my mother-in-law still have hope and are anxious to see what Mayo Clinic can do for her. I pass on all of the information I read here and stories of hope on to my mother-in-law and their family.

    Hi Joy, and welcome to the board. I hope you'll find it helpful and supportive. I'm sorry to hear of your mother-in-law's troubles since her diagnosis-- and I sympathize. My Mom was diagnosed in December, and the first 2 months were a whirlwind. My Mom also had blood clots-- unfortunately, the formation of clots is an all too common side effect of cancer. She was on coumadin for 7 weeks before her medical team realized that it wasn't working (she formed MORE clots in her legs), and she was switched to Lovenox via home injection.

    This is a difficult road. . . no doubt about it, but it's very important to be hopeful and positive. Don't dwell on statistics, because they're always scary, and nothing is absolute. Survival depends on all sorts of things, including the mental attitude and will of the patient. Wishing you strength and luck.
