Vissible breast lump

Five months ago I went to my dr about a "dimple" on my breast. He said it was nothing but sent me for a mammogram anyways because of strong family history. The results of the mammogram were not conclusive, and I had an ultrasound. The decision was to wait six months and follow up with another mammogram.
Now I have a lump on my left breast that is visible. It is right off of a "dimple" that my dr said was "nothing". My under arm is also swollen. My question is I can SEE the lump, but I can't "find" it when I do an exam. Has anyone ever heard of this? I am unsure what to do since I can not feel it. I'm only 36. Should I wait? By the way, had hyster so I do not experience monthly cycles anymore. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

    Dear April,

Please get this lump removed immediately! You must ask to be referred to a breast surgeon immediately. Don't waste any time. It may be nothing, but you cannot take a chance. I had a lump and a mammogram showed nothing. The doctor did not biopsy it and it was cancer. It was caught just in time. Please, please April see someone soon. Your doctor is not treating this properly. See another doctor soon.

    Hugs.

I agreee, get someone to look at it now and don't take no for an answer. If it is cancer the earlier you catch it the less agressive the treatment can be. Get it a biospy done now. If you can see it then the surgeon should be able to find it. Also if they had planned on doing a follow up mamogram that may show it now. It may also help to get a sonagram done as well. Call the doctors Monday and push them. It may be nothing... but it is much better to be safe.

April, ditto everyone else. MY lump I had for over 10 years....no changes on yearly mamo, so nothing was done. During diagnosis of my colon ca, PET scan lit up the lump. STILL no one took serious, until I became a BIG HAG. (I'd just been through one cancer that almost took my life, didn't want another to stealth get me!). FINALLY got someone to do needle biopsy. Much to everyone's surprise, not only was the lump cancer, but was already going out through the sentinal nodes!!!!! As a result, in for 2nd round of chemo (first for the colon) in less than a year. My prognosis is good, chemo almost finished. But I COULD HAVE DIED from it without me pushing the issue. And, by the way, 2 days before my needle biopsy (remember, I had cancer as it turned out) I had a letter from a mamo done 2 weeks earlier. The letter said "Congratulations, we see no evidence of cancer". (Not that this test is not effective, its just that it is just a place to start, ESPECIALLY if you are having symptoms)
Take care, April and do RUN don't WALK to someone who is willing to do more. YOU are your own best advocate!!!!
Keep us posted, please, and my prayers are there with you.

I say when there is doubt check it out. be safe not sorry. do you have any pain in the area of the lump? I was told cancer dont hurt by someone who is a nurse. When I learned i had cancer i sent word to that nurse she was wrong cancer does hurt so what ever else your experiencing please have it checked by a Dr so you know. Cancer has a mind of its own so you really dont know what to watch for.
If something worries you push your Dr to check it out. If he wont do it find someone who will. Never accept that its nothing because it could be something, dont wait find out as soon as you can. Drs dont always know the right thing to do.
I wish you great health and happiness

I went for my mammogram today. They scheduled an appoitment for an ultrasound for tomorrow. I'm just praying that whatever "it" is "it" shows up clear enough tomorrow for a correct diagnosis. I really don't want to be told to wait another 6 months and come back again! Then again, patience was never one of my strong points! April

I was a well built athletic woman who showed no signs of being ill but was extremely tired when I first found my lump. I found it because my breast was painful and yes there were times when I couldn't find it. I was told without any diagnostic testing that it was fibrous cyst and not to worry. It took just six months for it to spread and I found myself with a lump in arm pit the size of pea, but grew to a golf ball size with in one week. I knew what I had...
I am nine year survivor of stage 3 IDC breast cancer with 11 out of 21 positive nodes and Her2 negative. I often want to know what they are waiting for??? They too were waiting for first lump to change something that didn't happen till they did the needle biopsy.
The only family history I had in family was paternal grandmother had breast cancer in 60's yet wasn't a red flag at time I found my first lump in the place I was. It wasn't till I moved that every cancer in family was important and my smoking history and drinking became part of the picture.
    I hope this helps you,
    Tara

    Hi April,

I know you are going through a lot but hang in there. Did they press the area of the breast when they did the mammogram? They must do that to get a good look at the lump. If the ultrasound does not show anything, please do NOT wait another 6 months. INSIST on a biopsy. Do not leave until you have the appointment - no matter what they say. Six months can make all the difference. Good luck.

Boy, you said it, Lesley....couldn't agree more. If I would have pushed 2 years earlier, I could have possibly avoided chemo resulting from node involvement. (And avoided losing my hair, thank you very much!)

    20/20 hindsight, I know!!!!

    Hello April,
I highly encourage you to recieve a second opinion. You have located two questionable tissue discrepancies in your breast that must be investigated further. They may be benign, however you will have peace of mind. God bless.

I am a 33 year old BC survivor of almost one year. I went in to a Women's Clinic when my lump was the size of a beebee. I was told it was a clogged duct from nursing which I hadn't nursed in over 6 months! I was told it couldn't be cancer. So, I didn't worry about it until it started to grow rapidly into a large mass. I was still not taken seriously for over a year! I kept going in saying something was wrong. I was ultimantly told the breast pain and pressure was probably mastitis and to go home and run my breast under hot water in the shower. By then it was STAGE THREE BREAST CANCER!!! It was only after a second opion from another clinic that I was taken seriously! My mammogram, biopsy, and ultasound showed a large mass but NOT cancer. It was only discovered after it was surgically removed! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE if you feel in your gut something is wrong and you aren't being taken seriously...you know your body better than any doctor! Get a second opinion!
