Juicing Help
I'm a Stage IV survivor (almost 2 years since diagnosis) and I recently started juicing every morning. I use 1-2 apples, a carrot, celery, kale or spinach, 1 orange and maybe pineapple, kiwi or something like that. It seems to have helped a lot with the digestive related side effects of my weekly chemo (Erbitux and CPT11). Does anyone know what's good, what's not or any other hints?
Thanks

Hi phil!
WOW! Good for you!!!
When I put together my juicing protocol I chose digestive restorative veggies (and an apple to add taste). Looks like you are too.
My recipe was as follows:
1 granny smith apple
4-6 carrots (depending on size)
1 stalk celery
1 handful parsley
1 handful spinach
1 small chunk ginger
to this I added my green powder (Barleans Greens now), 2 T organic Flax Seed, protein powder.
The Flax gives it fiber which is KEY in keeping the glycemic index in check.
But you only use one carrot so that doesn';t seem to be an issue for you.
I now use kale instead of spinach.
I have never done the pineapple or orange but I would think that would be good!
Keep it up!!

Emily, thanks for your recipe. It seems relatively palatable (is it?). I forget, but what kind of juicer do you use?2bhealed said:Hi phil!

It has nothing to do with anything, but my Mom passed away yesterday. I'm bummed. As a good friend (also with cancer) said to me - it's a painful loss that I don't need at this time. But, she was so happy about my recent NED results, I'm kind of thinking that doing everything I can to keep them that way is a kind of memorial to her (in addition of course to being something I want to do). Oh, well, I digress, but it distracts me from negative thoughts.

Be sure you ask your onc about any green powder you might use. My onc didn't want me using it while i was on chemo. Said there was no way to know how it might interfere with chemo. Even Dr Andrew Weil said that there's evidence that hi antioxidents may limit the effectiveness of chemo drugs.

Thanks, Emily. My Mom was 85 and suffered from pulmonary artery hypertension and congestive heart failure. Strangely, she seemed to be doing better in the last month. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts and prayers.2bhealed said:Gosh! I am so sorry about your Mom!!!! That is so sad. Was she sick? Was this sudden?

My onc did not want me on antioxidants during chemo as well - I started everything directly after stopping chemo. I use red cabbage - proably abouta quarter of a head of a little less - with red delicious apple and carrot; sometimes I add red beet roots (but I don't make them the main veg). I add the juicing to a meal so that I receive proteins and grain/vegs (fiber) to slow absorbtion. I am sensitive to the carrot juice sugar rush....alone it hits my system too quickly. I'm not able to juice every day, but I do enjoy it and hope that the benefits are longlasting. All the best and I hope you have received a lot of good ideas - Mauragoldfinch said:Phil
