Female Radiation Side Effect

Hi,

I finished radiation to my pelvis are to treat rectal cacner on July 11th. I haven't felt comfortable remaining sexually active since my rectal cancer diagnosis, so I used a vaginal dilator to try to minimize narrowing and closing off of the vagina which can happen from radiatino. I then had surgery on Sept 9. Since surgery, I didn't dilate for a while (was recovering and in and out of hospital dealing with adhesions).

I now have significant vaginal closing. I was examined yesterday. The doctor said I'm only open about two inches on the right side and one inch on the left of my vagina! She was not able to see my cervix because of the closing. She believes I developed ulcers from the radiation and that scar tissue then developed between them, closing things off.

She is going to look at my last CT scan that was done to see what she can see and then possibly order more tests to get a better idea of what things look like. She thinks I might have to have surgery after I am finished with chemo (May?
) after liver surgery in January. ( I wonder if they could do it when I have liver surgery?)

Anyone out there had this problem? How are things now?

Also who treated you? The doctor who I saw yesterday was an Urologist. I was very surprised that the radiation dept referred me to this Doctor to treat something I would think is an OBGYN issue. I guess this urologist is a sexual dysfunction expert. But I still wonder if she is the most knowledgeable on vaginal adhesions. I may try to get a second opinion.
