small lung nodule

Hi everybody,
I haven't posted in a while because my computer hasn't been working. I have been catching up on all the posts that I missed.
I'm really sorry to hear about anyone who has had bad news. I truly hate cancer!
Congratulations to all who have had good news!
I was diagnosed with rectal cancer in March 2004. Had radiation and chemo, surgery the end of June 2004 followed by 6 months of chemo. NED since the surgery.
I had a pet scan last week after 6 months. The scan showed a small nodule in my lung. My oncologist wasn't sure if it was cancer or an irritation caused by an unknown infection. I am having a ct scan tomorrow.
Has anyone ever heard of a nodule that was never there before showing up on a pet scan that wasn't cancer?
I have been a wreck since I found out the news, even though my oncologist doesn't seem too worried about it.
Thanks for listening.
Jamie

Good luck with the scan and let us know how it goes.CAMaura said:Hi Jamie - I only know that Pet-scans are noted for showing both false-positives and, unfortunately, false-negatives.....Wishing you all the best. Hang in there. Good thoughts coming your way - Maura

Hi Jamie,
I have had three small nodules in my lungs, and none have turned out to be cancerous. One was biopsied and found to be a hamartoma which I believe is relatively rare. I'm not sure what the other two are, but I had a PET/CT scan last week and they have not grown or changed in two years. My oncologist told me that if you took 100 people off the street and checked their lungs, 25 would have "something" show up, but only 1 of those would have something malignant. I hope this helps. Also, I do know that you can have an infection and it will show up on a PET.
Let us know how things turn out. Wishing the best for you.
