I'm back in the hospital. I had surgery , rectum removed, j-pouch and temporary ileosotmy on Sept 9th. Now I am back because of 3 separate cramping and vomiting attacks. They dont seem to know hwhat is wrong and its very frustrating. Antone with similiar experience? Adhesions, ilioum kinks, discoordinated small intestines, blockage....these are being thrown around as possibilities. I'm want to go home!!! : )

Oh Maria - I have no info for you, just wishes that the docs may quickly find the source of this and that you are resting comfortably. The weekends can be a hard time in hospitals--do take care and ask for lots of assistance. My hope is that the docs who are on-call can give your prompt answers/actions. All of my best thoughts coming your way - Maura0

Hi Maria,
Yes, I had the same problem on two separate occasions, both requiring hospitalization and a nasal tube. After a week without any thing on my stomach, my system began working again and I didn't have to have surgery. They said it was a blockage due to adhesions from surgery. It will be two years since my original surgery on Oct. 15th. I never had to surgery, but I seem to still be plagued with abdominal kinks from time to time.
I hope your problem will resolve soon. I'm thinking of you.
Hugs,

Hi Maria.
I'm very sorry to hear that you are having these problems. I can certainly understand that things are difficult for you. My father had a j-pouch surgery, and even now, 10 years later, he **occasionally** has blockage problems. I stress that it is an occasional thing, because I don't want to worry you that he still has these problems so long after the surgery. It's really a small part of his life, so maybe in your case it's just your body reacting to the new plumbing system. In any event, I hope that everything works out and that you get to go home soon.
I'm wishing the best for you, Maria.

I've been hospitalized twice for suspected blockages -- later diagnosed as "semi-blockages". Both times they sorted themselves out -- after I was on IV tube for a while. I'm still not convinced they were really blockages -- but, those cramps sure were intense! Being in the hospital sucks. Hope you get "sprung" real soon!

Hi Maria,
I had the same surgery as this in April, and twice in that month I had the same problems as you - severe vomiting and cramping. The first time was due to ileal (sp?) bowel (my bowel forgot to wake up after surgery) and the second was a suspected partial blockage (although nothing showed up on x-ray). Both of these resolved themselves within a couple of days of fluids only, and I have had no problems since. I hope this resolves quickly for you too, as those cramps are a killer (as is the vomiting with the stitches in - ouch I feel for you!). Hang in there and let us know how you go.

Not at all uncommon as you can see from the report. it is usually some sort of blocakage- mainly functional as the bowel get used to its new configeration rahter than a physical blockage but as you knwo strictures and adhesions can play their part. They tend to settle by conservative management ie drip and iv tube and bet less frequent in time. i actually was fine after my inital op for placement of ileostomy but found after the reversal I had several episodes of this. Found eating a very unchallenging low fibre diet helped and slowly increasing amounts and variety of food settled it down.
Let us know how you get on,

Maria,
I was thinking of you recently and wondering how the warrior was doing. I feel your pain and frustration. I have had that problem multiple times. They don't always find a reason. Your body has been traumatized by chemo, rad., and surgery. It ususally gets better with belly rest and IV fluids.
You will get through this. Hang in there.
