colostomy

What kind of leakage? Is it stool or muscous?? I have a rectal stump with an illeostomy. The lining of the rectum secrets mucous. Normally when connected the whole colon and rectum has a mucous lining which helps the stool move along. So when not in use it still produces active cells. My GI Dr said also when not in use you get a colitis. Hope this answers your question.0

I had a rectal stump for 10 years until Apr 2005. It always discharged mucous (a thimblefull daily). Some days there was blood due to colitis. Then precancer was found Dec 04. I had the rectum out in Apr 05 and they discovered a tumour Dukes stage 3 (4 out of 22 lymph nodes affected). So dont wait too long if you have UC in colon or rectum!!! I'm currently 8 weeks into 12 week 5FU with infusion pump. I've had no adverse side effects. Just metallic taste in mouth.
