I had a mastectomy with reconstruction from my belly. I am concerned about radiation and any effect it may have on new breast. Other than the burning, are there any other side effects?

    Hi Patty,

I also had TRAM reconstruction if that is what you are referring to. I had delayed reconstruction, which means that my radiation came first, then I had the TRAM. I know that changes can occur after radiation to the reconstructed breast but a lot depends on where the radiation is directed (which is dictated upon where your cancer was located) and how your body heals. Your plastic surgeon should be able to give you some idea of what could happen. Perhaps the "revision" phase of your reconstruction could be held off and any changes caused by the radiation could be dealt with then. Good luck to you.
