Cycling Tip O' The Day

In honor of Lance, here is a cycling tip for all you gear heads:

PUSH THE CLIMBS

Conventional wisdom is to take it easy on the climbs and then make up time on the downhills, but if you can push to your anaerobic limits, the absolute time in minutes you'll save on the climbs (climbing at 12 mph instead of 10 for example) will be more than you could ever make up on the downhill (going 37 instead of 35 for a shorter time on the descent). The secret is staying aerobic on the climb, and it will take practice to know your own limits.

Enjoy.

Barb ( who has to fight her way past the cob webs to see her bike. AND the lycra is long gone!)

    Thanks Barb!
I wish that could still be a gear head....my bike was stollen and haven't replaced it yet - a major BOOHOO. What used to work for me was to stay in the saddle - no "hot shot" standing climbs. I could save energy, stay in a good gear and concentrate. It worked for me.....but I am sure that there are MANY here who are better cyclists than I ever was.

I was sorry to hear that you cannot pick up the Tour on OLN. Any hope for ESPN? If nothing else......the papers are giving it good coverage.

Thanks for the post and have a great Fourth. Hope you are hangin' out by the pool.

Maura - who misses the great feeling of actually making it to the top of a hill - if only in her small-ring gears...

with 18-plus speeds nowadays, who needs to push? Wouldn't spinning at higher cadence-(RPMS) do the same thing?
Bud-who also owns a spider bicycle..

I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, the "tip" was refering to time saved, not energy expended.

Barb ( who doesn't always know what she is talking about.) Imagine that. :o

Maura - who still was using cages on her moutnain bike.....a little freaked out by being stuck to the bike with toe clips...and more than once got in the car to drive away with her bike helmet still on!
