Military Plastic Surgeon

Hello Everyone:
As I mentioned before in previous postings, I'm thinking of having reconstruction, specifically the TRAM Flap or DIEP Flap. What I didn't mention is that I'm a military dependent. My husband serves in the United States Marine Corps. This may be a long shot, but I'm interested in knowing if anyone out there has had their reconstruction done by a military plastic surgeon, specifically in the DC, Virginia or Maryland area.

In late 2002, I spoke to a military plastic surgeon about my options. Since it's been a long time, I'm thinking of scheduling another consult to, once again, discuss reconstruction. I'm scared. The thought of another major surgery really scares me. I just want a surgeon who really is an expert at breast reconstruction. I hope there is someone out there who has helpful information for me.

    Hi Sharon,

    I hope that you can get the answers that you need. The tram flap is a big deal and you need to have a doc that you feel good about. Be sure to ask to see his pics of ppl he has done and find out how many he has done, or she. This surgery will put you down for a while, but for me, it was totally worth it.     See if you can get a referral to Plastics at Walter Reed Army Hospital. I just saw a plastic surgeon there and he took his time explaining all the options and the pros and cons of each. They work closely with the Breast Care Center there so they do a fair number of reconstructive surgeries. They recommended the TRAM as my best option. There is also a plastic surgeon at Bethesda with a good reputation but she was only doing war casualties when I checked a few months ago. Best of luck. Let me know if you need more info.

    I'm not sure if I'm too late to respond, but do everything you can to get to Walter Reed Army Medical Center! I didn't end up having a mastectomy nor reconstructive surgery; but right from my initial biopsy and diagnosis, my options were clearly presented to me. The possibilty of a massectomy loomed right from the start, and they gave me so much information before I had the biopsy that I "signed away rights" to allow them to do a masectomy AND reconstruction if they saw fit while going into tissue for the biopsy! (now, that's faith!) As any of us who deal with military docs/care there is always hesitation and probably horror stories to tell, but Walter Reed has a "top-notch" breast care clinic that (from what I've heard) is probably one of the best in the world.
