Hello everybody,
Here I thought I would be celebrating my one year dx on Good Friday only to now have the gears shift to my daughter. Meghan is nine years old and was rushed to the hospital where she was dx as having type 1 diabetes. We were all in shock not only with the dx but also almost losing her. Now we have taken a crash course from learning about breast cancer to now learning about diabetes.
She is such a strong little girl and has already begun to give herself her own injections. I am truly amazed because when I was on Nuprogen for four months my husband gave me my injections.
She will be insulin dependent for the rest of her life followed by a very strick diet and exercise.
Does anybody have any good websites that I may try for diabetes?
Well I just wanted to share with you all how proud I am of my daughter, I am very blessed to have two such wonderful children.
Kris

Hi Kris! Sorry to hear about your daughter. Kids are amazing and adapt to new situations better than we do. A woman at work has a daughter who was dx. as a brittle diabetic and has done very well. She has an insulin pump which gives her the right amount of insulin as she needs it. Good luck to all of you. Joclyn Clinic is a big Diabetes clinic(I think) . Try to go on line and see if they have an informational website. Take care. Keep us informed! HUGS!! Cathy

    Thanks Cathy,
Interestly enough the clinic you speak of is Joslin Diabetes Clinic which was founded by Dr Joslin, who is from my home town and was friends with my great grandmother. I was only just reminded of this last night by my uncle. I still have major research to do..Thanks for you thoughts
And yes you are right, kids adapt much better than adults...lol

Hi Kris, Diabetese.org is a good website and also the diabetes forecast magazine has a whole section for kids. I was diagnosed at age 11. Back then they told you not to have children Well I have 4 and I am thin and except for the breast cancer I have no other medical problems. My poor mother ended up with 3 kids out of 5 with it, so she really had to learn alot fast. You love your daughter and that is the key you will do fine,It is a tough disease in alot of ways but can be managed. I was like your daughter and gave my own insulin from the first day in the hospital. I felt like it was just who I was and I think helped me feel in charge of keeping myself healthy tell your daughter you met an "old" type one on line who has done just fine! Maybe in your area they have a summer camp for type 1's. I went as a child and it was great to meet alot of other kids going through what I was, kind of like we all feel when we come to these boards! Good Luck e mail me if you have any questions. Hugs,
    Lynne
