I'm unable to work and social security benefits will take 5 months or more to kick in. Anyone else dealing with financial diffuculties while going thru cancer treatment? Does anyone know of any organizations out there that can help with more than wigs, etc., like rent?

Hi Michelle. I'm not sure about the major sources of help, but I am aware that my local breast cancer coalition could have provided me with financial help. I chose to have them send a cleaning service twice a month. Don't hesitate to tap into every resource available. I hope you receive what you need.

    Michelle,

So sorry to hear of your financial difficulties on top of everything else.

You might want to try contacting the American Cancer Society and it is possible they could assist you.

Also (and quite a few would not want to do this, but it is available), you can contact your State's Welfare Board to see if it is possible to get temporary help for your pressing needs. Let them know this would be short term until your SS kicks in. They can also provide you with medical care (if you need it) and food stamps. You do what you have to do and there is certainly no shame in it.

BTW, I am presently on SS Disability (and have been for 13 years) and when mine kicked in (it took me 4 years to get it), I was sent a check for retroactive benefits (quite a good sum of money...of course, now it's all gone).

Hope I have been of help.

4 years? I pray it doesn't take that long. Thanks for your suggestion. I guess I have to do what I have to do, including food stamps (I have 3 boys). Thanks.

I wish you the best of luck in your search for assistance with your finances. Since you do have children, the State should be more amenable to assisting you via food stamps and cash money.

The only other thing I can suggest is to contact a church in your area. Even though you may not be a member of the church, God fearing people are always willing to lend a hand.

Take good care and love those boys!!! Diane

Hi SusanAnne. Is your breast cancer coalition located in the Chicagoland area?

Michele, You poor dear. Since, you have children you should be able to get financial aide and food stamps for you and your children until your Social Security kicks in. Also,in my state we also have emergency assistance through our welfare office too.Your local welfare office should be able to help you.Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!
