pain during chemo

I have finished my fifth out of six chemo treatments, and I have experienced terrible back pain the entire time. After two trips to the emergency room, my oncologist finally referred me to a pain clinic, and I have been taking pain medication (Vicuprofen) daily for the past six weeks or so. I'm not worried about the addiction because I know I can wean myself off. But I am concerned that the pain will NOT go away after the chemo is over (the doctors think it will.) But reading your messages tell me different. Since I'm so looking forward to the end of chemo as a time to celebrate, I really don't want to be in constant pain afterward (who would?) But I would like to know what to expect. Any ideas, experiences, suggestions? Thanks. I'm new to this site.

    Congrats on almost being finished with chemo!
    The only pain I had from chemo was my veins became very painful, well, almost forgot, whole body felt like I'd been run over by a freight train; but nothing real specific like back pain. Have you had your back x-rayed? You may have actually hurt it, may have a herniated disc and may need an MRI. My other thought is a bone scan, just to make sure nothing else is going on. We have to listen to our bodies, and something that won't go away warrents looking into for other causes. I found out the hard way that frequently you have to insist the docs do further studies.

    I also had the excruciating back pain during chemo, and it does subside. I think most of the residual pain people have mentioned on the message board was in the hips. That takes longer, but it also subsides. None of it will immediately disappear following the last treatment, but at least knowing that you will be able to walk and sleep without pain in time is reassuring. Regardless, celebrate every single thing you can find to celebrate, always.

    Hi, I had back pain too, but my last treatment was on December 10th and I don't have any back pain anymore. It will go away, just hang in there. You have one more to go. It is such a wonderful feeling once it is all over with. You will have alot to celebrate. Keep smiling. God be with you. your fellow survivor, hugs, boogirl
