Hi all, I,m due for my yearly mamogram and wanted to know, is there another way yet? Do they do MRI's. The left side is still tender from a lumpectomy last spring and I can't imagine actually putting it in the machine and smashing it like they do. there's got to be a better way!! Amelia

    Hi amelia:

In my area, a few facilities are beginning to use the new PET/CT combination technology, for assessment (i.e. if something needs further evaluation, following mammo, for example, it would then be covered by insurance). From what I understand, at this point, the PET, for regular check ups, is not yet covered by most insurances. Most insurers are expected to cover it, once Medicare begins to cover it, however. This from the techs where I go for my mammo's. Doesn't help most of us at this point, for regular check ups, but looks great for the future. ANYTHING more comfortable is a huge plus.

    Love, light and laughter,
    Ink

amelia, i just had my mammogram, my first after a lumpectomy 6 months ago. I was still very tender too. I told the technician this and she was very gentle with me and it was not very painful. Uncomfortable, but not really painful. I hope you get a good technician, i think that is the key. I wish you wll. By the way, mine was clear. laura

Congratulations on the clear mammo laura.
Amelia, it's still a mammogram, but would recommend you get a CAD. (Ask your doc) Usually the techs are very considerate of situation, and it doesn't hurt as bad as you anticipate. Hope all goes well for you.

Thanks for the reply everyone. Knowing your all really listening is sooo wonderful. Sometimes I really feel "alone" in my own little cancer world, if you know what I mean. You are all in my prayers, God Bless Amelia
