Well I wanted to share with everyone but yesterday was my "comimg out day". I went without my wig in public, yes I mean work. I am the new blonde Hallie berry. It is pretty short and quite curly. Still a little thin. It was scary, sort of another turning point. I actually think it was more traumatic then losing my hair. I expected it, knew pretty much when it would happened and had a course of action. This time I didnt know peoples reaction. MOst comments were very flattering, one comment made about how thin it was, but I attributed that to age and stupidity. Anyway wanted to share another milestone. Thanks for being here. Sharon

Kewl Sharon! I remember the day, it made me feel quite vulnerable. I'd worn a cap/hat or turban for about a year, so I felt like I had left the house without completely dressing. People do say and react differently. Some would actually touch the back of my head! Like I was a baby and comment
on the softness and the color. It was, and I stress the was, the most striking jet black and soooooooo soft. Now it's back to plain brown and hard to manage on humid days, BUT I have hair!
Not complaining! OH NO, no way! Love it! LOL
The thing I thought funniest was this lady, complete stranger, walked up and said, "Oh, your hair, it's so soft. Is it natural? You know I'd die for hair like this..." I just laughed, and said, "lady I almost did". She looked at me so funny then she was embarassed, but I assured her all was fine.
Wishing you the best of hair days! hummingbyrd

What a milestone! Congrats! Some people just speak way before they think! But it does make for some funny stories. Beth

My coming out day was October 6. That was the day I attempted returning to the gym for an hour long exercise session Monday through Friday each week. I just knew the wig would slip off either during exercise or as I moved from one machine to the next, so I advanced my original plan to go wigless as of Halloween. Some people, mostly younger, have reacted with silliness, but not to my face. I wear bright lipstick and shiny earrings in an attempt to avoid mistaken impressions. My sister recommended that I visit the hair stylist to see whether it is possible to make one inch of hair look like more. Removing the wig and returning to the gym were two major things I did to reclaim my own life back. I salute your courage, Sharon.

Dee, you are one courageous lady also. And your sister is right. I did go to the hairdresser and even though she barely snipped she was able to calm some of the wildness. So its wash,a little gel, primp a little to cover thin spots and go and enjoy. Lots of love. Sharon

I hope its not too late to reply, but I cannot help comment on the hair thing. I started to wear a baseball cap before I started to lose my hair, that way when I showed up at the gym with a hat nobody thought anything about it. Until it was rather obvious, you know that "chemo" look. Anyway, I continued to workout at the gym throughout my whole chemo which was all summer, from may until the end of september. I was really proud of myself. Now my next step is to make it to the gym throughout radation. Hopefully I will be without a hat soon. Anyway I applaud you on your courage to be at the gym and continuing to exercise, it really is important.
Good luck and maybe our hair will grow back soon.

    bossomtime,
Congrats on your coming out. I am pretty new to this site and am reading back on some of the postings. I have been using the term "coming out" myself but for a different reason. I have finally "come out" in regards to finding other cancer survivors. I cannot wait until my "coming out" without a hat. How long did it take you to grow it back. It has been 4 weeks since my last chemo and I am getting some fuzz. I have also been thinking how strange it will be to go out the first time without a hat. I have not worn a wig, I tried but one of my twins just did not like mommy in it, so I decided to not wear one.
    Good luck to you!

Well we are so glad that you came here and sought out others. I think this is a great group of people, always here to support you, laugh with you, cry with you and answer questions through their own experiences. As far as how long it took my hair to come back, it seemed like forever. I finished my chemo in january and radiation in march. But my hair has always been slow growing. I have noticed that since I stopped wearing my wig it seems to be filling in a little better. Maybe it just needed a little air. LOL. Come visit the chat room sometime. Take care.
