My wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 7/2000 and a complete hysterectomy with 16 lymph node removal was performed. Since cancer showed in 2 nodes, she was treated with taxol+carboplatin and was free for 18 months. The cancer came back in both lungs. Carboplatin treatment destroyed the tumors in the left lung but the major tumor with minute ones in the right lung were resistant. She was treated with doxil - no good and then with gemsar+cisplatin - no good. Nothing seems to affect these tumors and they are growing again. Has anyone experienced this or heard of something else that could be used. Thanks for any help you can give.

    Hi Art61, I had ovarian cancer April 1998, I am 50 years old. I am married, we have no children of our own. We have a dog - Rosie, and a cat - Angel. I read your message on the Discussion Board, wanted to say HI to you and your wife. Please know you are NOT alone! I just started coming to the ACS site about a month ago. I don't know if you believe in God, or a Higher Power, I do BELIEVE in GOD - tell me your wife's name, I will include HER and YOU (Art if that's your name) in my prayers.     My mother was diagnosed with Stage IV in Dec. '01. She tried carbo/taxol and had a recurrence on the sixth month.. So they gave her Doxil.. It didn't work, so she's now on Gemzar.. I found a list of other chemo drugs for your family to research..They're listed on the Sloan-Kettering website: http://www.mskcc.org/patient_education/html/7820.cfm. The drugs include the following:
    5-FU , Adria , Adriamycin ,Adrucil ,Carboplatin
    CDDP, Cisplatin, Cis-platinum ,CTX, Cyclophosphamide - Oral, Cytoxan , Doxil, Doxorubicin, Doxorubicin, Liposomal, Etoposide
    Fluorouracil, Gemcitabine, Gemzar, Hydroxyurea, Hydrea, IFEX, Ifosfamide, Mitoxantrone, Navelbine
    Nolvadex, Novantrone,Paclitaxel, Paraplatin, Platinol, Tamoxifen, Taxol, Topotecan, Vepesid, Vinorelbine, Vinorelbine Tartrate, VP-16

    Art, I went for 9 years after being diagnosed with Stage 4 OVCA. When it came back last year, they treated me with Doxil. It worked for the first five months and then became ineffective. I am currently being treated with a taxol/carboplatin cocktail once every three weeks and it seems to be keeping it stable. Don't give up hope. I am a single mother with three sons and my will to live is stronger than any disease. Please give your wife all the support and positive attitude that you can muster. Just because we have cancer doesn't mean that we are going to die tomorrow. We're all going to die at some point but that's just life. Please give your wife my best regards and let her know that there are millions of us out here in the same boat. I work a full time job at a law firm, I own my house and take care of it and during the weeks that I'm not suffering the side effects of chemo, I live my life to the fullest. Now take your wife out shopping or to a nice dinner. I have very little hair right now and I refuse to wear a wig. You would be so surprised how many people come up to me and tell me how beautiful they think it is. You obviously care deeply for your wife. She is a lucky woman. Keep up the good work.

    hi mirtle, my mother was diagnosed Stage 3 OVCA last march. she had a total hysterectomy and so far has taken 3 rounds of chemio (taxol and carboplatin). you are one of the few survivors i know or read about who had a recurrence 9 years later. how did you take care of yourself? what did you do in those 9 years to keep the cancer in remission? reading your messages has been encouraging. thanks for sharing.
