Toenails

My last chemo was taxotere/herceptin, 3 years ago. I lost the nails on most of my fingers and toes. My finger nails healed up well. My toenails are another sotory. The underlying nail bed is still thickened on many of my toes. My two big toes have not yet grown out. Is it normal for this to be occurring after 3 years? Or could I have something else going on, like a fungus infection? My toes hurt after being in shoes all day.

I'd check w/ your doc, sounds like we have a 'fungus among us'. This is very common after chemo, Lamisil is a good over the counter treatment cream, if you can get to the nailbed. You may also have to get all new shoes. That may be why its still hanging around, but check with your doctor first. He may want to rule out other things like diabetes... Hope this helps.

Anything is helpful at this point, thanks. My onc it totally worthless regarding after effects. IMO, he wasn't all that helpful during tx. I find it very hard to find a doc that has any knowledge of after effects of ca tx. I appreciate your response.

I had the CMF formula and my usual fungus toenails (one foot only)cleared up completely for awhile, but I almost died and only had one treatment! I agree that there are no real experts on these matters! What's wrong with the oncs? We do need specialists who are THERE even AFTER chemo who can explain these things. Maybe that's why I almost died--the fungus?/! No one offered any explanations...Maggs
