How long ago did he have the surgery? It takes a while for swelling to go away. Sometimes months depending how much tissue was removed. Also, the chemo slows down the body's ability to heal. Have him ask his surgeon if this is OK, he should have dealt with this before.

Good luck to both of you.

I am a male age 55. Had my right breast removed on 2/5/04. 20 lymph nodes as well. My surgeon, whom I consider to be an excellent practitioner, says that the swelling is normal. He checked it at my last visit, last Wednesday, with an ultrasound machine (same as the radiology lab used on my tumor after the mammogram) to see if the swelling was fluid or tissue. If it was fluid, he would have aspirated it out, but it wasn't. He says the swelling will go away, but very slowly.

My first chemo is tomorrow morning at 11:00; Herceptin (trastuzumab), Docetaxel (taxotere), and
    Carboplatin (paraplatin). HER2-neu positive tumor.

MY dad age 67 has breast cancer, second time around with mets to lung cancer. Has finished chemo now having herceptin 1 a week. He still is sore where he has the masc. make sure you do all the excersises, there important, also scar tissue can cause pain. Took my dad about 2 months for the swelling to go down.
hope this helped good luck Kodi
