Radiofrequency Ablation

Hi,

My Dad was diagnosed with esophageal cancer that has spread to the liver this past February 2003. He has 2 spots on his liver. The doc has suggested radiofrequency ablation for his liver if he doesn't respond well to any of the chemo they are trying on him. I was just wondering if anyone out there has had any success with this procedure whether it was primary or secondary liver cancer.

    My mother was diagnosed with stage 4, inoperable, primary liver cancer. Her procedure was very effective. She gained about six months. The physicians told us it was a life prolonging procedure - not a cure - just something to keep her alive long enough to get a transplant.

    One thing the physicians mentioned is that the procedure would not kill off microscopic cancers - anything they could not see. For this reason, it isn't a cure.

    My father has colon cancer mets to the liver that is inoperable. What is ablation exactly? And what are the requirements? Thanks for your help!!

    I'd love to hear more about RFA, and how it has affected your mom. My mom has been recommended for this type of treatment. She has secondary liver cancer, primary is adenocarcinoma of the jejunum.

    My mother had two radiofrequency ablations. She has liver cancer that came from colon cancer. The two treatments were successful, however, now her cancer has recurred in the liver. Now the doctors want to do chemoembolization, not RFA. They say that the RFA isn't keeping up fast enough with the new cancer cells. So now she must decide if she wants this very risky chemo. I'm trying to talk her into it. But please encourage your dad to do the RFA because chances are high that it will help him. Good luck. It's horrible that we have to go through this.

    From what I know, this is a great thing to have done to prolong life,it is not major surgery, the literally burn the cancer then put chemo diretly inside on the spot, I am waiting to be enrolled in a clinical trial in Maryland the National Health center
