Cancer in my neighborhood

I have learned that 12 people on my street of 30 homes have had cancer within the past 10 years. People of all ages ... children to elderly and all different types of cancers. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years after moving to the neigborhood. Should I make anything of this seemingly high number? Jamie

Sounds suspicious to me! I'd check w/ the tumor registry board in your state or the department of health. Do u live near a high line, high energy source, downstream from a major chemical co., or like here we have a lot of chem co South of us w/ a predominantly south wind so we get a lot of their air pollution. It shows on a graph too. The occurance rate of cancer in Houston is avg but as u go North #'s go up and spread like in the formation of a funnel (or a tornado) indicative of the way the wind blows. Also are there any potential dumping sites where co may have buried barrels? You can also contact local hospitals to get stats on # of cancer cases diagnosed per year for the past 3-4 years and see what that looks like. Just a few suggestions hope this helps. Hummingbyrd

Hi Jamie...I would certainly look into it. I came from a cancer cluster area as well. I think the national average for breast cancer is one in 8 or 9....our local average was 1 in 4. It's scary. I didn't persue anything since I don't live there any more, but if I did, I would probably have been active in finding out what the deal is. Good luck, and let us know if you decide to do anything. Hugs, Cyndi

I live right next to the county power lines ... and I've called them twice ...before we bought and when I was diagnosed ... and they have all kinds of stats that say the lines are okay. My Onc didn't feel like that was a factor either but... I don't know ... when I heard about the latest case I just don't know. Thanks for your info I am going to call the tumor registry. One more thing is that I live in Maryland ... one of the highest cancer states in the country. Thanks again. Jamie
