Hi Maria! I'm sorry your mother is in pain. I too am a chronic pain sufferer. However, my pain is due to a lumpectomy (not masectomy) 2 yrs. ago. I was also told repeatedly that 'it will get better', & it has not. I've been to numerous dr.'s re:breast pain and other body pains. I'm scheduled to go to a pain dr. this month. From my experiences & research so far, I suggest that your mother see a pain specialist. Make sure that one of the pain dr.'s specialties is breast pain before you schedule an appt. (I went to a pain spec. over 1 yr. ago, & after I got there, he said he 'doesn't do breasts'!) So that turned me off to the idea of a pain spec. Recently, I found out that some pain specialists really do only deal with certain parts of the body, so I'm anxious to give it a try with another pain spec, and yes, he does 'do breasts'! Hello Maria, I am sorry to hear that you're mom is suffering from pain also. I had mastectomy 6-01 and chemo after, I blamed chemo at the time for my tiredness and pain all over,but chemo finished 10-01 and I'm still in pain,memory problems,tired all the time,numbness and plain ole achey,they did testing ,couldn't find nothing wrong,the neurologist sent me to a rhematoid doctor and I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia,which could be brought on by something tramatic in your life!!! (think we qualify)Hope they can resolve your mom's pain, its tough after all we have gone through,you just want to get back to so called normalcy....best wishes and god bless,,karin

Pain is different for everyone. Sometimes just the trauma of being diagnosed with breast cancer and going through all the treatment your mom has had to go through is scarey and stressful. That kind of stress tenses the body and adds to the level of pain felt. It also takes a bit of time for the body to rally after the chemo treatments. If your mom had Procrit to help build her immune system up, that too can make your bones ache.
What I did was find a massage therapist that was fully trained in myofascial work , cranial sacral therapy, and understood unwinding and energy work. These terms might sound complicated but are not to a trained therapist. My licensed massage therapist has also gone through breast cancer so really knew what was going on. This bodywork helped release tensions throughout my body. The surgeries and treatments effect your entire body and sometimes you need a little help to unwind and feel supported enough to begin to let go and heal. I also started doing yoga (the same therapist also taught classes at a wellness center). I felt safe knowing that our therapist/yoga instructor would watch that we didn't overdo the excercises beyond our capabilities. I found that I was surprised to find positions that allowed me to really breath, release tensions, let go of pain and stiffness. I started with the seated yoga and then took on another day a more advanced class. Still, I would only do the positions I felt comfortable with and nothing extreme. It has enabled me to think more clearly and have longer moments of being pain free. The omega 3 oils are anti-inflammatory and also help. These are Carlson's Lemon Cod Liver oil, Evening Primrose, Borage Oil, Flaxseed Oil, also Vitamin E d-topherol or the natural one. Salmon fish also has the omega 3 oil so eating that regularly helps. It take ten minutes under the broiler. I rinse the piece of fish with water, rinse it with lemon juice and broil. Sprinkle some sliced almonds on top (they too have vit. e) and stir up some vegetables and you have a super dinner.
My discomfort is that I still am in the first stage of my reconstruction. This Thursday I will do surgery to complete the reconstruction and I'm sure it will make a difference.

It is well documented what can happen and I too think only a pain specialist can help. Lucky for me mine has traveled the world learning about all kinds of pain. She is young and has the time to spend she works out of cancer clinic. I am now pain free again after another year of being off work chronic pain out of control all new issues. Stomach a problem not the irritable bowl that they all believe it is though, I have lived and maintained that for 5 years, this is new. Now I am able to return to the land of living and get back to work. I am better than I have been long before I was dx with cancer even. Physical fitness does allot to help the body cope with pain and eating good nutrtionally sound food too. We are what we eat and sleep. I have learned so much this last year about myself and how my body works and I have suffered many years before this last one. Good luck and having a daughter out there trying to find out what she can is the best medicine of all. She is so lucky to have you by her side and that too will make all the difference in the world.
