Breast calcification

This is my first message as I heard about this on the TV. 18.5 yrs. ago I had a radical mastectomy, Paget's Disease, no chemo necessary. My recent mammo shows calcification in the other breast. I am scheduled for a biopsy. Has anyone had calcification and what was the outcome? Where did you find more info on this? I would appreciate any info you can give. Thanks!!!

    Hi Audrey. Welcome! I had calcifications on my mammo. 80% turn out to be nothing. Mine was cancer. Called DCIS,non invasive stage 0. I had lumpectomy then ended up with a mastectomy and recon. !% of margins come back positive with cells remaining. So I had the choice to have radiation and hope all cells were gone or mastectomy and know everything is gone. I chose the cure. Didn't need chemo either.     I had micro-calcifications on my mammagram. The docs assured me it was probably nothing, and gave me a 5 - 15% chance it would turn out to be cancerous. Well, unfortunately, I fell into the small percentage. I was diagnosed with DCIS and LCIS. The micro-calcifications were benign but the surrounding tissue was cancerous. I opted for a double mastectomy so I wouldnt have to worry about it re-occuring in my healthy breast. Good luck, keep us posted on the outcome of the biopsy. My prayers are with you!

    I was just recently diagnosed with DCIS, it showed up on the mammogram as calcifications, but because they see calcifications that does not means there is cancer, only 15% of the time is it cancer. Also with mine I had a lumpectomy and I am getting ready for radiation. My surgeon told me that 10 years ago with my type of cancer I would have had a mastectomy, so it is really different than it was years ago. Good luck and let us know how you are!

    My situation is very similar to yours. My mammo showed a change in the calcifactions and when checked they were ok, but cancer was found in the surrouding tissue. However, I had only the affected breast removed along with lymph node sampling. Maybe having calcifications saved us a lot of trouble later on.

    Hi Audrey, A year and a half ago I also had calcifications on mammogram. Alot of times they are nothing. Mine were something but very minor compared to most cancer. If malignant it is called ductal carcinoma insitu. That is what mine was. I only had to have lumpectomy and radiation since I only had one place. I am now on tamoxifen. It is considered stage o.
