DEEP PAIN IN HIPS AND LEGS

I AM A 17 YEAR BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR. I AM HAVING SEVERE PAIN IN MY HIPS,GROIN AND LEGS. I WONDER IF ANYONE HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM AND WHAT TYPE TEST I SHOULD HAVE TO SEE IF IT HAS SPREAD TO MY BONES. DEBPRAH

    Hi Deborah! Welcome to this site. I'm sorry you're having so much discomfort. Have you seen a doctor for an evaluation? Just because you have pain, doesn't mean you have mets.It could be a number of innocent things. If you haven't seen a MD go!To check for boney mets, they usually do a bone scan which is simple and painless. They may also do a CAT scan etc... The important thing is to have it checked out immed!     Go see an oncologist straight away. Even if it is not recurrence in the form of mets you need to know for your peace of mind. I had recurrence after 20 years so anything is possible. The sooner you get on to it the better. You need a CT and a bone scan. Remember a bone scan can be inconclusive as it just shows bone activity. I am guessing that as you are a 17 year survivor you are coming into the age group of arthritis etc so that would show on a bone scan as a hot spot too. A CT is more definitive and you also need a tumour marker test. This will show any heightened activity. If it is recurrence don't panic. Tamoxifen is a good starter to knock it back & gives good remission rates. I have that & Megace & Femara & radiation & Adriamycin chemo & currently on Taxotere chemo so there is plenty of help out there. If I can survive 20+ years so can you. Mostly get it checked out & try not to worry. Stay in touch. Love & hugs

    Hi Deborah,

    Please, please go and see your doctor. It could be a simple arthritic condition. If it is there are great new medications that can help you with the pain such as celebrex and Vioxx. F.Y.I. there have been some studies that show that Celebrex can reduce the occurance of breast cancer and colon cancer. It works with the Cox 2 Emzyne. Dr. Folkman, A Cancer Specialist at NCI has completed research on this same principal. Before the doctors decided that I was dealing with metastic breast cancer they had prescribed Celebrex to me. I decided to keep taking the Celebrex, because as my husband says it might be part of the solution.

    My doctors completed a bone scan, and then a pelvic ultrasound. After they got those results they did a PET scan.

    Have you ever had a bone scan? It's similiar to an MRI, only the machine rotates around you as you lie on the table-very non-invasive. I have had 2 of them to see if it spread to my bones.

    I agree with all these ladies. See your doctor and have a bone scan/cat scan. The bone scan can show things other than cancer, so if it's positive, they must still do tests to determine if its cancer. Our minds can continue to present possibilities to us that can be frightful, so get the facts as soon as you can. Knowledge is powerful and with it you can act in the best way for your healing. Congrats on being a 17 year survivor! I am coming up to my 1 year mark and look forward to someday celebrating lots of years of survivorship! Keep us posted and I'll be praying for you.
