I have not been here in a while. I found this board so helpful during my Daddy's illness. Thank all of you for your support and prayers.
My Daddy had SCLC (small cell). He was diagnosed in Novemeber 2000. He received chemo only because he had mets to the liver. (very small spots on the liver) They could not do radiation or surgery because of the liver. Anyway, he received carbo-platinum and V16 for 3 days every 3 weeks. In March..Good News! He was in remission! The chemo worked so well! He was never sick. He felt great and even went to the horse races on the days of his chemo treatments! We were so proud of him! He never lost weight and had no side affects.
In March, a week or so after his VERY last chemo, during a routine blood test, the Dr. said his blood sugar was elevated.(not his oncologist..but his regular Dr.) He prescibed a med for diabetes. Daddy took 2 of the pills (as directed) The pharmacist called him and said "Don't take any more of those pills!" "Call your Dr.! You are not supposed to take those with liver cancer!" My Dad called the Dr. The Dr. prescribed another kind of pill. Two days later...my dad could not breathe! His head swelled HUGE! His eyes were swollen shut. He could not swallow! It was obvious he was having an allergic reaction. I took the 2nd pills to the pharmacist. He said those pills had sulpha in them. He probably was allergic to them. I told the Dr. He denied it and treated him for something called Dermatamyatosis. Daddy had to be put on a feeding tube in the stomach and suctioned out of his mouth so he could breathe! We (my Mom, me and my Sister) stayed with him 24 hours a day..7 days a weeks for over a month in the hospital. We could not get the nurses to stay with him. They would not put him in ICU! He DIED ON JUNE 9TH. He was in pain..we prayed for him to go.
Please...to all of you...Please stay informed. The cancer DID NOT KILL MY DADDY.Always be informed as to what you or your loved one is taking in the way of prescips.
Thank you for letting me get this off my chest.
PS The Doctor that prescribed the Sulpha Drug never came to see my Dad in the hospital. (you see why I am a little bitter?)
My prayers go to each of you. God Bless
Marcy

    Marcy,
God bless you and your greiving family right now. Your Dad has gone to meet his maker now and is in no pain. You are so brave to share your story with all that you are going through. I am just starting to work with my Mom who has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Take care of yourself and forgive somehow.
    Blessings,

Dear Marcy, I am so sorry to hear about the drug reaction which caused your father's passing. Thank you for taking the time to write the long email on the board.
