Brothers with AML

My brother was diagnosed with AML in November of 2000. My other brother was a perfect match for the stem cell transplant. As they prepared for the transplant last week, my brother, the donor was diagnosed with AML. My family is numb! Do you know of others with multiple siblings diagnosed? Is there any research available for us to read? My sister and I do not match either brother...we have been tested. Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated...this load is too heavy! Cate

    Cate--I am so sorry to hear of this. I was diagnosed with AML in Sept 2000, so I can understand some of what your brothers are going through.

    Have they begun the search for donors? Any preliminary matches?

    One thing that I found helpful for myself to do, was to organize a Marrow Drive in our community. The more people you can get on the registry, the more chances they have to find donors--and more chances for others too. If you haven't already visited www.marrow.org, go there for some information.

    Wow. I am very sorry to hear your news. I hope and pray everything turned out well. I have never heard a story like this one. Please let me know that both your brothers are healthy and strong. If not, rest assured that they are in a better place. Not easy for the survivors, but you will all see one another again. I am not a bible thumper, but I was technically dead and had a very wonderful experience and I now know what happens when we move on. I know this is cold comfort, but it is simply the truth. I pray that your family survived this horrible situation. You certainly sound like a very strong person. Take care of yourself and your loved ones.     Cate: I know the shock and disbelief you and your family are going through. My sister was diagnosed with a childhood type of leukemia at 18 yrs. old. She battled it for 3 years, but died in 1985. Just this past sept., I was diagnosed with AML (an adult accute luekemia). Everyone says (incl. doctors) that the types are so different, that it is all just a fluke.......but I wonder sometimes. My third sister (who grew up with us) is fine. I also have been told it is something environmental. Can't rack my brains about it........it's too hard just staying focussed and positive enough on receovery. I had to respond to your message though, since it was so similar to mine. My parents are going through a tough time. I am 7 months pregnant, and start collecting stem cells tomorrow (and for many days) that will be used in my transplant in Jan. (2 weeks after they induce my baby). Good luck to you and your family!
