My mums was diagnoised w/lung cancer that has mastastases to the brain. The Dr's say she is stage four.We go to radiation treatment mon-fri,and chemo once a week.I don't get a very "informative" answer from the dr. I don't know what to expect from all of this. Can anyone tell me what questions I can ask so the dr. will tell me what I need to know. She was diagnoised 1-18-01.She "seems" to be doing okay(?).Her hands don't work "right" and she has weakness in her left leg.It seems she "shakes" alot.I don't know if this is from the treatment or the cancer.
Needless to say I'm scared to death, but I WILLNOT let her see me this scared.I'd appreciate any suggestions from anyone.

My husband was diagnosed last year with Stage IIIA lung cancer. It seemed to me that the National Cancer Insttitue home page has some great information on questions to ask the Dr. There web site is www.nci.nih.gov. From there you just go to the type of cancer and it kind of prompts you along. We found this site extremely helpful because it actually gives you a list of questions to ask. I hope this helps.0

I can relate to your fear. My mom was also diagnosed this year 10-31-01 and had her
left lung removed just before Christmas. She is currently recovering, yet is still in alot of pain. They think they got all the Cancer, but the fear of it returning always haunts me. The best advice I can give you is be strong for her, but reach out and express your feelings. (Maybe another family member or friend.) You have to be true to your feelings, and bottling them up doesn't do you or her any good. I am sorry to hear she has to undergo radiation and chemo, that I have no advice in that department as my mom underwent surgery alone. Reading helped me understand the terminology, but some deal better by not knowing all the jargon. Try looking on-line for reading material. The Lung Cancer Manual is a great resource that answered alot of my questions.
Good luck, and keep a positive outlook!

I too have lung cancer stage iv, that mastastase to ovary, adrenal gland and lypmon nodes. I have heard of procedure called Stereotactic Radiosurgery this is fairly new and you have to be accepted by the program. I have just been accepted and have first appt. on March 6, so I can't tell you much about it, other than it's suppose to be very helpful, espeially for those with brain tumors. This procedure is at Staten Island Tel: 718 226-8862.
Hope this helps. Good Luck0 -
My mother had lung cancer that metastisized to the liver and the brain. She too had the "shakes." We are told it is neuorpathy-a side effect of the chemo. Neuropathy is degeneration of the nerves in the extremeties. It is our understanding that the neuorapathy itself cannot be treated, one must instead focus on treating the symptoms and hope that the nerves regenerate. We too are looking for more information on this. Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York has been the most help.0
