Hair regrowth

I am wondering how long it takes for your hair to grow back in after chemo treatments. I had my last treatment on August 29th and my hair has started to grow back, but very slowly. It is getting thicker on top, but still hardly a half inch long. When will it get long enough for me not to have to wear my wig. Also I used to color my hair - and now it is growing in silver - how long do I need to wait before coloring it again? Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Hi Lucy, How are you doing? I had my last chemo treatment in Jan. and started going wigless in May, my hair also grows very slow but I have always kept my hair on the shorter side. Mine actually came in darker. Good luck. Murphy

My hair was black and straight before but came back black and curly afterwards. It has lost the curls after 2 yrs. I wore my wig for 10 months.

My hair has started coming out today. 15 days after 1st AC chemo. When it returns i have chosen a bit darker (it is mouse now and very fine) a bit thicker, and middling curly. My hair has been the bain of my life. Never thought I would get a chance to change it. Maybe i will be able to sing, too. susan

Thank you for your response to my question about hair regrowth. I was figuring how long it would be if I wear my wig for 10 months - that puts me to April. I hope mine grows back curly also - I heard also that the curls are only temporary!

I am doing pretty good now - actually finally enjoying food and life in general. I hope I can go wigless as soon as you did - but I don't believe mine is going to grow in darker - it seems to be more silver color! Now I am having fear of going to my Dr. and getting a masectomy. It brings fear to me all over again. Does this fear ever go away?

Lucy, susan here. I had a partial mastectomy, only to find out later that i now have to have a mastectomy when the chemo is done. My intital reaction was shock, because first path review had given the all clear, then i felt horror at the thought of anyother operation, then i felt such gratitude to the surgeon who had had the presence of mind to take a sample from another suspicious area, then i just accepted it. I can't change it, through no fault of my own, so I choose to accept it, and go on from there. For me, that gets rid of the fear, along with knowing as much as i possibly can about what is going on with this cancer. I only know this works for me. I dont have a great fear of dying either. I don't know why, but i just dont. and that's not because i have any belief in a god, or heaven. I just cannot explain it, or maybe i just haven't brushed close enough to it yet. both my parents died this year. maybe that has someting to do with it. i didnt mean to wax poetic at quite so much lenght, but i do hope something is of help. Take what you like, and leave the rest behind. susan

    Dear Lucy

I had 19 years between mastectomy & recurrence. Yes the fear goes away but you never forget the experience. It changes you. When I got recurrence I was not so afraid. Once you've faced it you are stronger the next time. You never take life for granted again. You also learn to get on with the life God has given you. It is for a purpose - you just need to find out what. Now I am doing so well on my treatments I intend to do a lot more for others in the same boat. I feel that is why I have been spared so far. Good luck with the rest of your treatment and the hair regrowth.
    Love & hugs

Lucy, I am 24 years old and had a double radical masectomy in April 2001. It's not as bad as you think. It saved my life and am doing great other than my chemo. As of tomorrow, I will be half done with it. My hair has already started to return, but like you said, really slow. I was scared at first about getting my mastectomy, but the fear does go away. I only had 2 days to deal with the fact that I was going to have one. My cancer was growing very rapidly and I had to have my surgery moved up a week. I hope that I have helped you in some way. Carrie
