I'm a 19 year -old cancer surivor. I was first diagnosed during my freshmen year in high school and have since then relapsed twice. Now, a junior in college, I've survived seven years of cancer experiences and am lost. My cancer has made me much more mature, as well as compassionate. But now, I'm constantly feeling lost and confused about what it means to be a survivor. My friends and family assume I'm going to put it behind me, but that's really the last thing I want to do. I'm looking for other people who have had some of the same feelings and possible recommendations.

I think a lot of suriviors are unsure of where and how cancer is in there life once treatment has ended. I celebrate my anniversary, for me this is the day I finished all treatment, surgery, bloodwork, etc, every year more so than my birthday. I have become involved with the American cancer society and am pursuing a degree in health education. So for me cancer and my experience is something i remeber every day in something I do. Helping others with the ACS has really given me the opportunity to move from the patient to a survivor. I think that is the most difficult part. Something so much a part of your life and lifestyle has suddenly disappeared and you don't know how to act, react, or what to do without it. Take each day one at a time and look at life from your perspective as a cancer survivor and enjoy it, most people don't have that priviledge. They haven't fought for their life and often take it for granted!

I'm a 17 year old about to start my senior year in high school and I too was diagnosed with cancer my freshman year. On Sept. 9th I will be done with my 2 and a 1/2 years of treatment. I too am lost and feeling so alone. I'm scared of being off of chemo. If you would like to talk please don't hesitate in emailing me...lishaloo22@aol.com.

Hi, I'm Rory. I was about your age when I had Hodgkin's disease. I agree with you that it is not easy to just put it behind you. Having cancer at a young age changed for me my perception on things. I realized much later that support groups are extremely important in assisting with the recovery, both physically and mentally. I also realized that talking about it to other cancer survivors or professionals helps. I have had to deal with some secondary residuals from the treatment which showed up later. I didn't realize it then, but the more knowledgable you are about your cancer and long term things to watch for, the better off. I also realized the importance of living a full life and appreciating the little things. It sounds like your parents are very concerned in there own way. I'm sure they love you very much and probably believe that they are supporting you with a positive outlook - and they should. Be honest with them about your feelings. Share with them your fears (we all have them), and ask for their support in dealing with them. Find a support group and bring your parents along if you can. You are not alone. Hang in there. Good Luck! ~ Rory

P.S. There are live chat rooms on oncology.com where you can link up with cancer buddies and just talk. There is also live chats for friends and family. I believe most take place in the evening, but there are also discussion pages on all kinds of subjects such as emotional issues, spirituality, etc. You have to register, but its free. Another great resource and support site.

Hi I know how you feel. Don't be confused its now time to live and be what ever you set your mind to do. Cancer makes one spiritually inclined. I think we all have a deep energy in us that radiates and draws people in and want to be around you. Call me crazy but its happened to me all my life and I keep on telling myself it must be all in my head. Things happen for reason, you meet people for a reason and you expeirence life's sad and happier times. Cancer being a sad part of mine. I lost my childhood I feel because I wasn't allowed to do the things other kids were doing for the fear I would get hurt. Sometimes you have to just let the sail go its own way and where you end up maybe the start of something wonderful. God Bless. Smile.
