First Transrectal Biopsy
I'm scheduled for my first prostate transrectal biopsy on Monday morning. I made the appointment months ago, but it’s been on my mind ever since. As an older man, I feel pretty anxious about everything, from the prep to the procedure and the results. Any tips for easing my nerves?

Hi,
I had my rectal biopsy done in my Urologist office, did the prep as directed. Very little discomfort, just a slight pinch when they took the samples. Took my antibiotics as directed and had no issues other than what was expected. Told my Urologist to be gentle with me as I am a virgin. He chuckled and said he would be, I was not his first virgin. Should be easy peazy, the worst part was waiting for the results, good luck.

I was put under for mine, nice easy nap. Like a colonoscopy.
The most important thing to know, though, is all fear and anxiety is about the future. You are never anxious about what is happening, only about what (you think) is going to happen. So…don’t think about it. 🙂

Mine was done at my Urologist office. I was in and out maybe 20 minutes. No pain. My urologist scheduled them on Wednesday’s beginning at 4:00pm after his day appointments. Mine was at 5:00pm. There were four of us there all with our wives. It was pretty funny as we all knew what the others were also there for. Once the ice was broken everyone had a good time. The wives just looked at us. I went home, had dinner, early bedtime and the next day back to work, but still avoided anything heavy for the day. I also ate a nice soft diet for a week. I did not want any constipation. I was also on antibiotics for seven days.

My first in early 2023 was in an outpatient facility and I was out completely under.
My second was in late 2024 and it was in the Urologist office and was awake for all. A little local anesthesia before he took the samples. Not really any pain, just uncomfortable and like a little pinch as the samples are taken and my Urologist would count down from 3 each time he’d take a sample He took 12 in all.
I can’t remember the prep for the first one. The second time clear liquids day before and am enema before I went in.0 -
My first one was fall 2023 transrectal fusion biopsy ultrasound imaged. I was put under. The only real issue I had was with the required antibiotics it messed up my digestive tract for a few weeks afterward. Blood in urine for a few days and seamen for a couple weeks. I've had two more biopsies since and both of those were transperineal also under anesthesia which in my opinion were very easy and faster recovery. Hardly any blood in urine. Anyhow, that's just my experience. All in all, not a big deal. You'll be fine!

have a great doctor. Don’t worry about it. I have had four of them done the last one. I think they took 20 snips. I didn’t even feel it. I was out of there in five minutes. Worst thing is afterwards you might be some blood for maybe two or three days that’s it no big deal.
