Catheter and Cystoscope
I need some advice. After spending a week with a catheter due to blood clots in my urine, it was removed and followed with a cystoscopy. Before the catheter was placed (after three attempts), I was able to urinate. However, now I’m having difficulty urinating—I feel a frequent urge but can only produce a trickle. I also feel constipated. I assume my bladder has been through a lot of trauma from both the catheter and the cystoscopy, but I want to avoid having another catheter. Next week I'm scheduled for a prostate biopsy.

Hi,
Are you on any kind of drugs like Flomax or antibiotics to help you urinate? The biopsy will either be through the rectum or the area between your rectum and Penis. What does your Urologist think about doing the biopsy with your current bladder/urethra issues?

Previously, my CT showed I had an enlarged prostate and an inflamed bladder diverticulitis. During the cystoscope, the urologist removed the diverticulitis debris. I'm on alfuzosin, but expect that will be changed after my biopsy. An earlier MRI revealed two prostate lesions. The urologist also commented I have a large prostate and may require surgical intervention. As I just had the cystoscope yesterday, I haven't yet spoken to my urologist.

How's your PSA? Did you have a digital exam and did it find abnormalities? Just a note that my urologist told me that my BPH issues were not related to the cancer they discovered. So they can be two separate things. I know after my surgery and catheter experience, it felt like the whole system was irritated for a couple of weeks.

Hi,
If it was me I would wait a few weeks before the biopsy just to let my other aggravations settle down. Even though I had no problems with my rectal biopsy why take the chance of compounding things. Just a thought, good luck.
