Gatorade on Doxil/carboplatin
If you folks have had this happen how did you go... my wife's ovarian cancer has reemerged... She has had her first round of Doxil/carboplatin and now she is saying that using distilled water for proper hydration is a problem become it is starting to taste bad... We are going to try apple juice but I was wondering if Gatorade would be a good try... I just am concerned that the electrolytes in Gatorade may be an issue with chemo... Any experience with this?

future_dreamer I drank PowerAid (similar to Gatorade) while on chemo and never had an issue, but I would encourage you to reach out to the doctors office to ask and see if they have any suggestions. I was trying to up my fluid intake and wanted to replace some of all my body needed that was being washed away.
Your wife is lucky to have such a caring spouse.

Gatorade has been my go-to during chemo, especially in those times when water tastes funny or my blood pressure is low. It helps replace minerals and nutrients and adds a little flavor that can mean more fluids get in me. I usually pour half a bottle of Gatorade to the same amount of water in a water bottle (always klutzy, more so with neuropathy). Sometimes I vary the concentration. A splash of lemonade in water works well too. Protein drinks count as hydration too, some of the new ones are like having a milkshake. On tough days I have a chocolate one before bed, it's like a treat, and helps with everything.

I had difficulty with water too. My brother gave me a Zero Water (brand) pitcher which filtered out the minerals and additives. I also used plastic utensils. No metal water bottles, only glass or plastic. I hope your wife finds something that works for her. One cautionary note: good oral hygiene is required if she is going to drink Gatorade. If toothpaste is a problem look for non foaming. The one I used was Boka (brand) and did not have fluoride. I loved the ginger one. Thanks for taking good care of your wife.
