After surgery
I had my prostate removed on May 16th a week later I had the Catherine out. I think I'm having a real problem with urinary control I'm doing the exercises which I know I should have started before surgery probably at least a month before surgery but didn't because I really didn't understand them. I think I'm gaining a little control but when I'm working on something or doing something there seems to be no control constantly changing the pad and sleeping with a depends I'm up three times a night peeing. Actually worse than when I had a swollen prostate at least I could make it through the night. I'm hoping to hear some encouraging here thanks

Hi,
Sorry to say but you are just starting your journey. When I had my Prostate removed for a few weeks I was in Depends 24/7 and them moved onto a light pad a couple of months later. Hopefully you improve over time. That the main thing as you heal, continual improvement over weeks to months. No one heals at the same rate. It took me about a year to stabilize to the point where Im at now. The Kegals should be done as soon as the doctor gives you the OK. You do the Kegals using the muscles when you pee and squirt out the last few drops. I still do about 150/day. Good luck and talk to a specialist for help with your leakage if you don’t feel good progress is being made.

Kegels take some time but will work eventually. Coincidentally, I had my prostate removed om May 15 but in 2009. I used depends overnight and light pads during the day. Got rid of the overnight depends after I woke up dry three nights in a row. Stopped using the daytime pads in early August, so hang in there.

this is what I’ve learned over the last two months I started wearing the extra heavy duty and I put a pad inside of that and then I just throw a pair of boxers over. It makes me feel better so now if the pad happens to leak, it leaks into the depends not into my underwear and then into my pants so it’s been actually working very well. I actually feel a lot more comfortable this way.

I do appreciate your comments and experiences I got to admit this is a little depressing. And I know it hasn't been that long since my surgery and I'm not done with this by any means. I have an upcoming pet scan and have to start hormonal therapy and it is good to hear that I'm not the only one that is trying to control their bladder and urination I'm right there with you guys with changing the pads and trying to make it through the night which has been on successful so far. I'm hoping I'll have better news by the end of July.

I have just been diagnosed with prostate cancer. But several years ago I began having incontinence as a result of a TURP procedure on my prostate. I eventually had surgery to install an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS). This is a valve placed on your urethra that you open when you need to pee. It closes by itself. I have not had any leaking since I had the AUS installed. Check with your urologist.
