Hi everyone I have to go get a biopsy because I have microcalifications in my right breast. Would love to hear from people that have them and it came back benign or success stories if it came back cancerous. Need the biopsy because they're new and my mother had ductal cancer at 83. I'm trying to be positive and think even if it is something usually at stage 0 but no one wants to have the C word. Thanks.

Microcalcifications are usually associated with Stage O -Ductal Carcinoma In Situ. That means "in place". The biopsy will let you know if you if you calcifications are DCIS or benign. Be grateful that this was noticed. If it is DCIS it can be taken care of with lumpectomy , and depending on the grade possible radiation. Not all DCIS will advance to cancer. Some doctors refer to DCIS as pre-cancer.

I was treated with lumpectomy and radiation for Stage 0, Grade 3 DCIS. After surgery and radiation my doctor says she sees no reason why I should ever have to go through this again.

All females have a 12% lifetime chance of developing breast cancer, because of my diagnosis my lifetime chance is 15%.

If you do end up being diagnosed with DCIS, take a deep breath and thank your lucky stars it wasn't worse. Do a search on this site for DCIS. There is a lot of helpful information that has been shared.

This site below may be helpful in predicting your chance or recurrence.

Thank you. What confuses me is you say lumplectomy but I don't have a lump so if it does come back as cancer do they just take out the microcalifications and the surrounding tissue?

The definition of a lumpectomy: Lumpectomy is surgery to remove cancer or other abnormal tissue from your breast. During a lumpectomy procedure, the surgeon removes the cancer or other abnormal tissue and a small amount of the healthy tissue that surrounds it. This ensures that all of the abnormal tissue is removed.

Hi Mindy. I am having biopsy this week for microcalcifications in left breast that they labeled as birads 4a. (Amorphous) . Been reading a lot. Was wondering how your biopsy went and also if DCIS what they told you the course of treatment would be?

Hello. I am having mine Thursday. Mine was birards 4 too. My mother had DCI S. But she was stage 2 and they did the surgery and then just put her on pills for 5 years and 2 years later she's doing good Let's hope we both get good news!. I asked the doctor what the worst case scenario was and she said that you would most likely be stage 0 and they would remove it and maybe have radiation but no chemo. So I'm trying to stay positive and think even if it does come back as not good news At least it would be at the beginning stage. Good luck. let me know how it goes.
