We have to share our experiences here. My Dr said it's quite rare for this type of cancer to spread to both sides so hopefully your husband will have more focused radiation and possibly less side effects from radiation. I've been reading about treatment for HPV+ and in the last 7-8 years Dr's have used less aggressive treatments with positive results so they are working hard at minimizing the long term side effects. Encourage and support your husband to do any therapy recommended, I know my wife's positive reinforcement helps, as it consumes 4 hours of my day. Just another hill to climb.

Hello Marie, I was diagnosed with the same cancer back in August. I also had lots of back and forth regarding what surgeries and treatments I'd undergoe. I eventually had the tumor on my tonsil removed and a full neck dissection removing 48 lymph nodes in September. I'm currently entering into week 4 of 7 of radiation treatments. Please reach out if you have any questions and I'll do my best to respond with any knowledge or advice I can give. Virtual Hugs

Hi John
How are you doing with your treatments? I know everyone is different but hearing different stories has helped in knowing what are some of the things we may be facing. The oncologist said he will start having side effects beginning around Week 3.
Thank you for reaching out.

Hi Marie. I’m getting through the treatments. I’m grateful I’m starting week 4. The side effects do start around week 3. Some of my beard fell out over the weekend so I shaved. Silver lining is I look younger haha I have a very dry mouth and saliva issues. Sugar free seltzer water really helps with the gooey saliva and I use biotene for dry mouth. I’ve heard xylitol gum helps produce saliva. Ive been very good about using the prescription strength fluoride the dental oncologist gave me. The pain is starting to get bad but Tylenol and ibuprofen help along with Gabapentin. Has your husband been fitted for his radiation mask? One of the most difficult issues I’ve had is that my mask got very tight and choked me once my throat swelled up from the radiation. Ask the radiologist to take that into consideration when fitting the mask. I’ll keep you posted with any lessons I learn and advice to offer. I’m very grateful this is a curable cancer so there’s lots of hope. Your husband will get through this. Hugs

Hi Jonvon, it appears we're at the exact pace with radiation. My Dr prescribed 'magic mouthwash' for me friday to help relieve the sores beginning in my mouth. the 2 cups water 1/2 tsp baking soda and 1/2 tsp salt is supposed to help with saliva. The carbonated water gets tough to drink as sores in the mouth develop.

Reading your comments is a weight being lifted. I can read articles, listen to the doctors, but hearing actual experiences is easing my mind a bit. I am making notes of all your helpful tips.
I will continue to send good thoughts to all of you. You are a blessing. And I will also share my husbands journey.

thanks Steven. The sores will be starting this week so I’m told I’ll ask about that mouthwash. What are you using for the burns on your neck? I ordered some 100% aloe Vera gel that arrives tomorrow. My doc gave me Xanax today for the mask treatment. It really helped.

I put on weight b4 radiation, asked the dr for pain meds after 3 weeks and work on the oral and neck therapy. I'm not getting a feeding tube until I have to. smoothies with protean, ensure, puree a dinner meal and use the magic mouth as directed. I know i'm still a month out from the worst of it but the therapy helps.

The hospital gave me calendula for my neck and also recommended eucerin or other lotions that have no perfume. Do not apply within 4 hours of radiation. While I'm beginning my 4th week I had 3- 4 day weeks due to holiday and start date so 14 treatments after today. At least it's winter in chicago.

My doctor prescribed 1mg Xanax to take right before mask radiation treatment. It has really helped with the claustrophobia anxiety and pain from the tight mask. I have found that radiation techs are just the best and really listen and try to help. So be sure to communicate with them as well.

Hi Steven How many weeks are you scheduled for treatment?
The oncologist wants my husband to have feeding tube placed prior to treatment. He has planning appt this coming Friday and scheduling treatment to start the week of January 16…so I’m loading up on questions.
He had initial consults with all doctors to be involved when it was then suggested by hematologist that he have surgery. Change of plans had us going to a different facility…more consultations. That all changed when the surgeon said he couldn’t do surgery without a tracheotomy because my husband is on Plavix. Surgeon also wanted him off Plavix for more than 30 days and Cardiologist said no.
Long story short…he is back to initial plan of treatment.
Thank you for sharing.
Marie
